AI Association Nepal: Pioneering Inclusive and Responsible AI Development

As the world is shifting towards the use of AI in different fields, the concern for its responsible use and impact on society is also grabbing attention. In this context, it is crucial to bring together a team of experts, to promote and guide the use of AI. 

With the realization of this need, The AI Association Nepal is launched on 9th February 2025, with the mission to promote the inclusive, transparent, and responsible use of AI-based technology in Nepal. This collaborative effort brings together AI experts, entrepreneurs, and researchers, committed to driving innovation in the country. Shailendra Raj Giri, founder of Merojob, has been assigned the role of the association’s president.

The association is focused on addressing Nepal’s prevailing challenges by leveraging AI in key sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture, and public services. The association will focus on developing innovative solutions tailored to Nepal’s unique needs, to create a meaningful impact on society.

At a recent stakeholder consultation event in Kathmandu, President Shailendra Raj Giri outlined the association’s vision and objectives. He emphasized the importance of supporting AI-related education, industry projects, and research and development. Giri stated, “The association plans to support AI-related education and industry projects, promote research and development, and conduct training programs, workshops, and skill-building initiatives.” His leadership underscores the organization’s commitment to fostering AI innovation in Nepal.

Advocate Santosh Sigdel, General Secretary of the association and a legal expert analyzed the drafted AI policy introduced by the Government of Nepal during the event. He highlighted the need for ethical and inclusive AI practices to ensure the policy serves the broader interests of society.

The AI Association Nepal has announced several key initiatives, including engaging in policy discussions, launching an AI research grant program, and establishing an open-source AI resource center. These efforts aim to create a collaborative environment where researchers, entrepreneurs, and stakeholders can work together to advance AI technology responsibly.

The establishment of this association marks a significant step forward in Nepal’s AI journey aiming towards impactful and sustainable progress.
