Job Description

General Role

The habitat literacy engineer creates awareness and capacity material and works closely with the communities to disseminate and build the capacity of the community on habitat related issues. He/she undertakes the survey, diagnosis & recommendations of affected houses as well as participates in the organization and implementation of the reinforcement activities that take place in the 2 VDCs.  He/she is involved in the supervision of the quality of construction and must also have the ability to transfer skills to others (BBBS dissemination) and create a team atmosphere. 

The habitat literacy engineer is responsible of the construction projects by planning, organizing, and monitoring. He/she will be working in tandem with an architect.

He/she will be under the responsibility of the project manager in Nepal and the habitat literacy project officer in Paris.

Main Job Tasks and Responsibilities

Specific tasks

  • Participate in assessment surveys within the 2 VDCs
  • Complete the diagnosis of 150 houses in the 2 VDCs
  • Design and set up awareness programs and capacity building activities with the community and  in partnership with the local partner (JN)
  • Work closely with community members to enhance their habitat literacy
  • Lead habitat literacy activities with community members
  • Create habitat literacy material in English and nepali
  • Updates the project team with relevant information regarding reconstruction procedures and knowledge
  • organize reinforcement and/or retrofitting work sites with local and international labor
  • Manage a small team of grassroots builders, monitoring and controlling their performance.

General tasks

  • Meets operational standards by contributing information to strategic plans and reviews; implementing production, productivity, quality, and customer-service standards; resolving problems; identifying construction improvements and general community
  • Meets construction budget by monitoring project expenditures; identifying variances; implementing corrective actions; providing non-project annual operating and capital budget information.
  • Accomplishes construction project by defining project purpose and scope; calculating resources required; establishing standards and protocols; allocating resources; scheduling and coordinating staff and labor; evaluating milestone assumptions and conclusions; resolving design problems; evaluating and implementing change orders.
  • Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following and enforcing standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.
  • Updates job knowledge by tracking and understanding emerging construction practices and standards; participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
  • Enhances organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
