  • Education: Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Natural Resource Management, or related field.
  • Experience: Minimum 3 years in ecological agriculture or agro-ecology or organic farming, agricultural extension, or community-based projects.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience in agro-ecology, ecological agriculture or organic farming, catchment rehabilitation, and agricultural extension is desirable and an added advantage.

  • Strong interpersonal and community mobilization skills.
  • Ability to work in remote areas and collaborate with local governments, organizations, and farmers.
  • Willingness to travel and conduct fieldwork.
  • A collaborative attitude with the ability to work effectively in a team, build relationships, and foster a positive and inclusive work environment.
  • Capacity to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced NGO/INGO setting, handling multiple tasks and shifting priorities as needed.
  • Willing to reside (preferably with family) in Helambu is a prerequisite.
  • Proficiency in Nepali and English is a prerequisite; the Tamang and Hyolmu languages is desirable.

Job Description

Reporting To: Project Technical Coordinator

Key Responsibilities

Farmers Group (FG) Formation and Climate-Smart Agriculture

  • Form, reform, and revitalize FGs adopting Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) practices.
  • Reach out to targeted 350 vulnerable households with improved access to seeds, organic manures, and offer technical advice for increased agricultural production and productivity.
  • Prepare household inventories and identify adaptation options based on wealth and vulnerability rankings already done during the LAPA process.
  • Support well-off farmers in selling excess food to local markets, fostering circular economic model in collaboration with local stakeholders.

Organic Farming, Agro-ecology, Ecological Farming, and Crop Diversification

  • Identify potential crops by climatic zones (mountain, hills, lower belts) and household production scale.
  • Promote agro-ecological , and organic farming on locally important food crop species (potatoes, off-season vegetables, millet, wheat, rice). 
  • Provide technical, and smart advises to farmers for improved food production thereby increasing income, food and nutrition security .
  • Facilitate connections between larger farmers and cooperatives/investors to strengthen market systems.
  • Categorically and phase-wise addressing of challenges identified during the LAPA development processes.

Access to Agricultural Inputs

  • Prioritize vulnerable/smallholder households for improved access to seeds, organic fertilizers, low-cost farm equipment, and micro-loans.
  • Encourage well-off households to access inputs/services through private or public sectors.
  • Take the local issues of challenges in accessing agricultural input suppliers to ensure the timely supply of inputs as per local demands. 

Farmers Group (FG) Capacity Building

  • Ensure FGs become operational in all wards, with demonstration plots for locally important food crop species to develop a model that can be replicated in other crop species.
  • Facilitate testing of seed and soil qualities, demonstration of improved production practices for addressing local problems (pests, soil nutrition, water management, climate change solutions).

Potato Support Program

  • Introduce diverse yet locally adaptable potato varieties resilient to climate variability and vulnerability.
  • Establish an improved potato rustic store and also a collection centre that facilitates traditional potato marketing 
  • Advocate to shorten the existing lengthy process of compensation damaged by wild animals.

Community Seed Banks (CSB)

  • Establish and manage community seed bank in HRM to restore, conserve, promote, and secure locally preferred seeds.
  • Organize agriculture-based biodiversity fairs to collect seeds and information.
  • Organize training and awareness activities to sensitize communities on the importance of CSBs for self-reliant seed systems.
  • Develop CSB operational guidelines and mechanisms in consultation with local stakeholders.
