Job Description

Overall purpose of the job

The Project Officer is responsible for strategizing, implementation, partnership development and management, monitoring, evaluation, learning, knowledge management and direct day to day project management of BBC Media Action's projects. These activities include systematically tracking and monitoring project activities, co-ordinating project training workshops, maintaining and organising project documentation, helping compile project progress reports and contributing to the design and planning of new projects and new business development initiatives. He/she has specific responsibility for managing the important broadcast partnerships that BBC Media Action has with Community FM and Commercial FM stations in Nepal and ensuring that these partnerships are implemented effectively and collaboratively and meet overall project objectives. The Project Officer also oversees the successful implementation of a new strategy for broadcast partnerships which has a key focus on identifying the training needs of broadcast partners through a comprehensive capacity assessment.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide input into the development of the long-term vision and strategic planning of BBC Media Action’ program portfolio in Nepal.
  • Network with peers to develop a shared analysis of local issues and corresponding strategies.
  • Co-develop strategies to achieve the goal and objectives
  • Design, plan and manage all BBC Media Action's broadcast partner relationships and associated activities. Provide technical advice and/or resource such support as needed.
  • In compliance with BBC Media Action policies and practices oversee all contractual negotiations with broadcast partners.
  • Maintain strong and collaborative relationships with broadcast partners and stakeholders.
  • Ensure effective systems are in place to organise and track all communications with broadcast partners.
  • Identify new opportunities for broadcast partnerships that will help BBC Media Action meet its overall objectives.
  • Manage and be accountable for the annual budget for broadcast partnerships, ensuring that project outputs are in accordance with that budget and in line with BBC Media Action's financial procedures.
  • Oversee the successful implementation of a Training Needs Assessment Survey for broadcast partners, working closely with partners and BBC Media Action's Research and Learning team on this.
  • Identify, design and deliver a series of effective and creative capacity strengthening interventions based on the results of the Assessment Survey.
  • Ensure systematic tracking and monitoring of the schedules of broadcast partners is in place and that BBC Media Action programme outputs are reaching intended audiences.
  • Resolve any problems that broadcast partners may have in receiving BBC Media Action programmes.
  • Undertake regular monitoring trips to broadcast partners across Nepal.
  • Produce regular project reporting on broadcast partnerships and contribute to internal project review sessions.
  • Work collaboratively with the BBC World Service in Nepal on broadcast partnerships and make sure the work of the BBC is closely integrated in this area.
  • Present the partnership work of BBC Media Action to external stakeholders and identify the range of opportunities for this.
  • Contribute to the effective monitoring, tracking and reporting of other project outputs and activities of BBC Media Action.
  • Oversee the successful delivery of a range of cross project related training activities
  • Contribute to the design of new projects and help identify new business opportunities for BBC Media Action in Nepal. Contribute to external fund raising proposals, donor reporting, and activities as requested
  • Plan and manage financial resources needed for quality implementation.

Essential skills and experience

  • Previous experience of working as a Project Officer or in a project related role.A proven track record in monitoring and tracking project activities.
  • Excellent writing and presentational skills and experience in project reporting.
  • Experience in identifying and designing training interventions and an understanding of different learning styles.
  • Good financial management skills with experience of managing a budget including budget forecasting and accurate and timely budget reporting.
  • Demonstrable experience in stakeholder management and building strong and effective partnership systems.
  • Clear understanding of the aims and values of BBC Media Action and an awareness of the development goals of our programming.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English.

Desired skills and experience

  • Experience in radio and/or television broadcasting and an understanding of the media landscape in Nepal.
