BBC Media Action uses various forms of media and communications to tackle poverty and contribute to long-term change in some of the world’s poorest places. To achieve this, we partner with civil society, local media and governments to:

  • produce creative programmes in multi-media formats which inform and engage audiences; and
  • strengthen the media sector through building professional capacity and infrastructure.

Our work in Nepal currently focuses on governance, resilience and humanitarian preparedness and response and health with strong gender commitments and focus. We support democratic governance through producing high-profile radio discussion programmes which encourages accountability through enabling people to question public figures. We also support community, commercial and national broadcasters to build management, technical, and editorial and production capacity to produce local discussion, drama, and lifeline programmes, especially around reconstruction and retrofitting techniques in earthquake affected districts. We are also working on designing an innovative mobile solution that can best support Female Community Health Volunteers in their work as health promoters and facilitators in communities across Nepal.

Over two years since the disaster, the housing situation still requires dedicated attention, especially when it comes to providing appropriate information to the affected population. Though some people have started to rebuild their homes, appropriate information about proper rebuilding policies and practices from reliable sources is still limited. Therefore, we are currently working on a project funded by UNOPS titled “Seismic Retrofitting of the Unsafe Housing”. Reporting to Head of Research, we are hiring Research Officer – Resilience to work full time on the dedicated resilience projects of BBC Media Action.
