BBC Media Action is the BBC’s international development charity. Working with media and communication to help reduce poverty and support people in claiming their rights, our aim is to inform, connect and empower people around the world. BBC Media Action reaches some 200 million people through local broadcast partners, BBC channels (especially the BBC World Service), online, mobile and print platforms and through interpersonal communication. We are currently delivering projects in 24 countries, including in Nepal. BBC Media Action has been working on communication for development projects in Nepal since 2007, giving us a well-developed understanding of Nepali audiences and significant experience of producing and evaluating media content on a range of issues to diverse target audiences.

Location base: Travel to project working areas for data collection 
Contract: 30 days with the possibility of extension.
The remuneration will be provided alongside travel insurance as per organisation policies. 
Organisation structure: The Field Researcher/s will report to the Senior Research Officer.

Job Responsibilities and Accountability

Context

BBC Media Action uses media and communication to reach millions of people through creative communication and trusted media, helping people have their say, understand their rights, responsibilities and each other, and take action to transform their own lives.​​​ We work across a range of thematic areas including health, governance and rights, resilience and humanitarian response and we partner with civil society, local media and governments to deliver our work. We have been working in Nepal since 2007 addressing a range of development issues including climate change adaptation, governance, health and humanitarian response.

BBC Media Action Nepal is seeking potential applicants for the position of “Field Researcher” to conduct qualitative research. This will be part of the BRIDGES project which involves building climate resilience through strengthened communication across the Weather Communication and Information Services (WCIS) system. This project addresses the critical need to enhance communication, understanding, and trust among key stakeholders involved in the WCIS communication pathway, from observation and forecasting to early warning systems and decision-making by end users.

Main Duties

  • Conduct field-based qualitative research, ensuring adherence to research protocols and ethical standards.
  • Moderate interviews and facilitate group discussions with cultural sensitivity.
  • Take comprehensive and detailed notes during interviews and group interactions.
  • Accurately transcribe recordings of interviews and discussions.
  • Translate transcriptions into English, ensuring accuracy of the original content.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to travel to remote locations for data collection purposes.

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • University degree in related field/s. 
  • Experience conducting field-based qualitative research is a must. 
  • Experience in moderating interviews and group discussions. 
  • Proficiency in detailed note-taking during interviews/discussions. 
  • Ability to transcribe recordings accurately and translate them into English. 
  • Proficiency in local languages is an advantage. 
  • Willingness to travel to remote locations. 
  • Strong communication skills including the ability to write well in English and Nepali.
  • Highest standards of integrity, discretion, and loyalty.
