Zoological Society of London (ZSL) is an international conservation charity founded in 1826 as the world's first scientific zoological society. During its near 200 years history, it has a firm legacy of conservation, research, and animal care in over 70 countries, helping it pursue its vision of a world where wildlife thrives. ZSL's purpose is to inspire, inform and empower people so that they understand their roles in helping stop wild animals from going extinct. Conservation and Policy Department (Permanent / full time)

Location: Kathmandu, ZSL Nepal

Overview of the role:  Our work in Nepal couldn’t be more urgent. We are looking for a leader who shares this passion and commitment. Our Country Representative will bring together and drive our conservation strategy in Nepal, setting overall direction and leading a motivated team, ensuring accountability for meeting our ambitions and maintaining alignment with ZSL’s overarching priorities. 

Key responsibilities: 

  • You will be responsible for ensuring that ZSL maximizes our impact on the issues that most matter to it. In particular you will:
  • Be responsible for all work that takes place for ZSL in Nepal, including responsibility of the delivery of work as ZSLs in-country representative to government and non-government partners
  • Leadership, management, and development of the ZSL Nepal team comprising with over two dozen staff
  • Maintain and expand ZSL presence and project partnerships in country by increasing our influence through fundraising opportunity, media and communications, and external engagement
  • The ideal candidate will have: 

Knowledge and skills

  • Substantial knowledge of relevant technical specialisms achieved through academic qualifications  or equivalent by experience
  • Developed knowledge of the requirements of donor compliance and financial management
  • Excellent skills in developing partnerships, fundraising, donor strategies, and international relations
  • Proven skills in the coaching, development and management of effective and motivated teams, including distance management
  • Excellent English written and verbal communication skills
  • Solid understanding of the global development sphere with specific reference to conservation issues in Nepal and South Asia

Experience

  • Proven experience of a leadership role and responsibilities in a conservation-led organization including the management of a country-office or comparable environment
  • Significant experience of working in a role that focussed on national policy and technical areas including biodiversity, human-wildlife conflict, illegal wildlife trade, climate change, policy and/or community engagement
  • Demonstrated experience in developing, implementing and evaluating strategic plans and policy 
  • Experience working with government and with donors/government aid agencies is essential
  • Experience of leading diplomatic communications, including through media and external representation opportunities to influence decision-makers, stakeholders and donors.
