DUTY STATION: Eastern Region of Nepal

PROJECT OVERVIEW

KTK-BELT is working with the Rainforest Trust to create new Conservation Areas in the eastern region of Nepal. The new Conservation Area will help expand protected areas, safeguarding endangered species on the IUCN Red List. To achieve this, KTK-BELT is building a team of project managers, thematic experts, community mobilizers, and youth fellows, to work at both the community level and at the advocacy level.

SCOPE OF WORK

The incumbent will be responsible for carrying out wetland inventories, guiding project staff and partners in wetland conservation, and developing community action plans and protocols. The incumbent will carry out aquatic diversity inventories. S/he will work on natural springs recharge projects in concert with project partners and local stakeholders.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Wetland vegetation survey, wildlife surveys, measurement experience, or wetland delineation experience preferred, preferably in the region
• Ability to conduct field-based plant ecological research in wetland settings, including pre-field season planning of projects, data collection procedures, obtaining necessary permits, staffing needs, travel and remote access logistics, selecting and buying equipment needed for field studies and travel arrangements.
• Advise on water aquifer recharge and watershed and spring-shed management best practices
• Survey aquatic diversity
• Liaise with technical and government partners in the implementation of wetland and water conservation-related project work

KEY QUALIFICATION/EXPERIENCE

• B.Sc. or PhD in water conservation, wetlands, botany, ecology, natural resources, range management, forestry, or related field
• Experience collecting data on vegetation, soils, water, and/or other environmental data
• Knowledge of wetland ecology and experience working in wetlands and/or riparian areas
• Knowledge of groundwater aquifers and spring shed management
• Experience with various vegetation sampling techniques related to wetlands
• GIS mapping a must
• Knowledge of flora and/or wetland species.
• Experience with soil taxonomy and describing soil profiles
• Experience collecting and processing water quality samples
• Experience with aerial photography, topographic map interpretation, and use of GPS
• Willingness and ability to work long hours and unusual schedules, travel extensively during the field season and hike long distances (up to 20 KM / day) while carrying a heavy pack (up to 40 lbs)
• Willingness and ability to work with a positive attitude in field conditions that include exposure to inclement weather, rugged terrain, hot or cold weather, mosquitos, while maintaining a strong commitment to team safety
• Careful attention to detail, strong oral communication skills and crew teamwork, and strong written and organizational skills to complete lengthy field forms

TIMING

Applications must be received by April 7, 2017. The position will be filled by the end of April 2017 and will be for an initial six-month term, with possibility of extension contingent on performance and funding.

RENUMERATION

Dependent on qualifications and experience and limited by allocation from the project funder.
