Job Description

The Traffic Safety Engineer shall carry out the following tasks:

  • For each of the listed potential crash locations, and potential road safety hazards prepare apreliminary design, road lay-outs; remove or mitigate trees, poles, banks, ditches, rocks and bridge ends etc.;
  • Checking of all proposed preliminary designs to ensure safety compliance
  • Ensure consistency in traffic design, signage and markings
  • Ensuring road delineation and signage in conformity with the Regulations of Government of Nepal and recommendations provided by the Task Team Leader
  • Elimination of abrupt changes to the traffic design and environment
  • Prepare the designs for road safety signs and road markings
  • Improve signage – especially a significant improvement in advisory signage on bends entrance into villages, towns and settlements
  • Improve marking of speed restrictions and speed restriction endings
  • Create safe passing opportunities for pedestrians
  • Design crash barriers at bridge abutments and similar interventions on embankments, and hair bends
  • Identify and design bus bays in villages
  • Improved protection for pedestrians in villages (footpaths on both sides of the road and pedestrian crossings on speed bumps);
  • Generate protection for pedestrians, particularly children, between villages (walkways, bus pedestrian routes, widened shoulders where walkways not feasible;
  • Design improved junction lay-outs at identified locations.
  • The Pavement Engineer shall work from the APPIIC office. 
  • He/she will bring his/her own laptop and design and reporting software. 
  • The Engineer must also be available to work during the weekends if so required by the Task Team Leader. 
  • Travel outside Kathmandu is foreseen. 
  • It is expected that the Engineer will travel over H11 and F140 to review and study specific intersections.
  • The Consultant should be an experienced traffic safety engineer with a university degree or equivalent professional qualification and should have a minimum experience of at least of 10 years working on the implementation of similar traffic and road safety improvement projects on Highways and Feeder Roads in Nepal.

The Period of engagement:  January 09 -February 03, 2017. 

 Working hours :  08.30 - 17.30 hours  (Monday to Friday).

Interested consultants must provide “Expression of Interest” including daily fee rates inclusive all costs, (except expenses on missions outside Kathmandu) and a current CV. The CV shall demonstrate that the Candidate possess the qualification and experience to perform the services, together with names and contact details of former supervisors or clients for reference.

If the individual consultant(s) has been proposed by a firm, only the experience and qualifications of the individual consultant shall be used in the selection process, not the firm’s corporate experience.

For each day traveled outside Kathmandu area, each of these Consultants will receive a per diem of $30 to cover for their expenses. Hotels and transport will be provided by the Project.
