  • Experience using qualitative/interview research methodologies.
  • Strong IT skills, including Excel and Powerpoint, and experience with statistical software packages such as SPSS.  
  • SPSS data analysis skills (including multivariate and segmentation techniques) would be an asset.
  • Experience/knowledge in research project management in Bangladesh. 
  • Strong written and spoken Nepali and English.
  • Strong report writing and presentation skills, communicating complex technical ideas using non-technical language to a wide range of audiences from journalists, production staff and development practitioners. 
  • Ability to plan and conduct work with minimal supervision.
  • Good time management skills, with a track record of delivering research findings to deadline.
  • Demonstrable understanding of cultural diversity and cross-cultural research within Bangladesh. 
  • Excellent interpersonal and diplomatic skills: ability to communicate and conduct business at all levels from grassroots to the highest levels of governments and media.

DESIRABLE SKILLS

  • Masters or MBA will add value.
  • Previous experience in audience media research.
  • Knowledge of environmental issues.
  • Previous research experience working with NGOs, including conducting rural participatory appraisals.

Job Description

Overall purpose of Job

We are looking for a talented and experienced Senior Research Officer to work on a 7-country project relating to public understandings of environmental issues in Asia. The candidate will have at least 3 years experience conducting audience research. The Senior Research Officer will be an experienced quantitative and qualitative researcher with strong design and analytical skills. He/she needs to be sound in quantitative data analysis, moderating FGDs and IDIs and reporting. Any experience of undertaking audience research to inform communications on the environment and related issues is highly desirable. The candidate will have strong written and spoken Nepali and English.

Duties:

  • Management: Manage the day to day workloads of research officers/assistants working on research work for a 7-country project relating to pubic understandings of environmental issues in Asia. Work with Research Manager(s) to develop detailed timelines for project research.
  • Research- Be involved in formulating research design, preparing and circulating RFPs/research brief (where appropriate), evaluating proposals, finalising and commissioning the research/organising and supervising the research officers/assistants to expediting the research in consultation with the line manager. 
  • Designing Research Methodology: Working with Research Managers based in London to design and draft research instruments. Input and help draft research design – sampling, recruitment and logistics.  Reviewing research instruments (questionnaires, discussion guides) prepared by agencies/internal clients. 
  • Liaison with Agencies/field team conducting fieldwork: Briefing the field team and supervising the pretesting/piloting/recruitment of the research instruments, as needed. Monitoring and controlling the quality of fieldwork/data collection, project timeliness and budgets for the research projects being handled. 
  • Conducting fieldwork: Moderating focus groups and conducting depth interviews.  Continually looking at ways to improve data collection both feeding into research design, moderation and analysis of data. 
  • Analysis and reporting: Lead the research officer/assistant in analysis of qualitative/quantitative data, prepare reports and present key findings.  These will then be finalised by the Research Manager.
  • Presenting Findings: With the Research Manager, help to disseminate the analysis of key findings and the strategic recommendations to the end users of research (internal/external customers). 
  • Personal Development: Review the latest trends and developments in research methodologies related to behaviour change, impact assessment and communications research, and evaluating the same for adoption in the Trust’s Research and Learning work.
  • Training - Travel to Delhi, India to participate in a regional training workshop. Participate in other Research and Learning workshops, and representing the Trust in other knowledge sharing workshops related to our project activities and project partners. Train and share knowledge with the research assistant where appropriate.
