|Job Description
Roles and responsibilities of this job
Build up Nepal is seeking a creative and hands-on Roof Innovation Lead - Architect / Engineer to solve one of the most critical challenges in low-cost housing: The Roof.
CGI sheet roofing dominates low-cost housing in Nepal, yet it remains expensive and thermally poor (freezing in winter, boiling in summer). We are looking for an Architect or Engineer to lead the research, design, and development of a low-cost, insulated roofing solution that can be scaled across the country.
The Mission
To innovate, research, and pilot an insulated roofing solution that is affordable for low-income families while ensuring high durability, social acceptance and minimal emissions.
You will not just be designing a structure; you will be developing a product that improves the quality of life for thousands of families. Your job is to take this project from the drawing board to the laboratory, and finally to real-world application in rural villages.
Key Responsibilities
Innovate & Design: Lead the R&D process to develop a roofing solution that is low-cost, distinctively insulated, earthquake-resilient, and culturally acceptable.
Prototyping & Testing: Move quickly from concepts to physical prototypes. Test materials for thermal performance, durability, and cost-efficiency.
Field Implementation: Travel to rural communities to pilot designs, gather feedback from local masons and homeowners, and adapt solutions to on-the-ground realities.
Cost Engineering: Rigorously analyze costs to ensure the final solution is affordable for low-income families without compromising safety.
Standardization: Develop technical manuals, guidelines, and training materials to help scale the solution once proven.

Other Specification
Educational Background: Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Civil Engineering, or Structural Engineering.
Experience: 5+ years of professional experience, with a specific history of working in rural communities or low-cost housing projects.
Technical Creativity: Demonstrated experience in R&D, product development, or using alternative materials. You must be able to think outside the standard concrete-and-rebar box.
Hands-on Approach: This is not purely a desk job (although significant computer research will be needed). You must be willing to get your hands dirty, work with materials, and spend time on construction sites in remote areas.
Passion for Impact: A genuine drive to solve technical challenges that directly help marginalized communities.
Location and Travel
The position is based at Build up Nepal’s office in Lalitpur, but requires frequent travel to field sites and rural communities to test prototypes and oversee pilot projects.
What We Offer
This is an opportunity to lead a flagship innovation project from scratch. We offer a competitive salary aligned with experience, alongside the creative freedom to research, test, and implement new ideas. You will work in a collaborative, high-energy environment within a mission-driven team, with the chance to make a real difference for low-income families by changing how homes are built in Nepal.
