ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Proven experience as a manager and strong leadership and budgeting skills.
  • At least 4 years experience working in the research field.
  • Experience managing, mentoring and training research staff. 
  • Experience of working at every stage of the research process from research design through to evaluation of project implementation and delivery.
  • Strong experience of quantitative and qualitative research techniques and knowledge of their application for media projects.
  • Previous experience of managing fieldwork, including managing research agencies, and adapting methods to challenging and constrained conditions.
  • Experience of working in challenging and difficult environments
  • Previous experience of conducting cross-cultural research and/or research with diverse audiences.
  • Strong presentation skills and track record of presentations to audiences at grassroots to senior levels.
  • Excellent interpersonal and diplomatic skills: ability to conduct business at all levels from grassroots to the highest levels of governments and media.
  • Ability to work on own initiative and organizing time effectively within a range of often conflicting deadlines.

  • Excellent spoken and written English and Nepali.

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Experience of working closely with television, radio, mobile, film and community media production teams with a view to applying research findings to the production of media outputs and broadcast strategy.
  • Research experience of media projects (television, radio, film and community media) in a variety of media environments.
  • SPSS data analysis skills (including multivariate and segmentation techniques) would be an asset.
  • Formal training in or strong knowledge of social sciences (e.g. psychology, sociology and anthropology).

Job Description

Overall purpose of Job

We are looking for a talented and experienced Nepali Research Manager to conduct innovative cross-cultural media and development research to support the BBC World Service Trust’s work in Nepal.  The candidate will be an experienced manager with budgeting experience as well as experience in quantitative and qualitative research with strong design and analytical skills. He/she will be able to effectively help recruit and lead a team in order to undertake statistical analysis using SPSS and to handle large data sets. Experience of undertaking audience research to inform the development and evaluate the impact of programming is highly desirable.

The Research Manager will manage and mentor a team of three and be in charge of oversight of all aspects of audience research activities conducted to inform the strategy, content and quality. He/she will evaluate the impact of the Trust’s media development and development communications projects in Nepal. The Research Manager will contribute to the synthesis and analysis of research with a particular emphasis on the beliefs, perceptions and media consumption habits of the Nepali population. Experience of managing the delivery of research undertaken by research agencies is essential.

DUTIES:

  • To support and oversee the section in the design all research inputs for the DFID Global Grant and any other projects that the BBC World Service Trust’s Nepal office undertakes, determining appropriate strategy, methodologies and analysis protocols.   
  • To oversee the commissioning of all audience research in coordination with production and broadcast schedules, negotiating and liaising with research agencies and key users of the research to ensure the results are suitable to meet project needs. 
  • To oversee the implementation and delivery of all audience research in order to ensure that activities meet quality standards and are completed within budget and deadline requirements. 
  • To help recruit and manage a three person Research & Learning team in Nepal.
  • To manage the project research budget, in collaboration with Research Manager, London.
  • To liaise with the donor at all stages of the project lifecycle in order to minimise duplication of efforts and complement the donor’s own research work.
  • To analyse and synthesise audience research results, applications and innovations with a view to identifying lessons learned and defining best practice.
  • To prepare and deliver internal (senior management, project managers, production teams) and external (the donor, media partners) research presentations and reports which will inform the creative process, monitor and evaluate project effectiveness, and/or contribute to project strategy.
  • To contribute to development of new concepts, projects and outputs, particularly during proposal writing, project extensions and renewals. 
  • To liaise with and represent the BBC World Service Trust and R&L to a range of stakeholders, including producers and project managers, research firms, academic institutions, donors, NGOs, media and government departments.
