Health System/Qualitative Senior Researcher

We are seeking an accomplished, highly motivated and experienced qualitative researcher to be a member of the research team at NNJS, Kathmandu. The research methodology for studies 1-4 will be developed collaboratively, working with relevant stake holders in workshops initially, and will then be finalised with other members of theresearch and technical advisors in Nepal and project staff at LSHTM.

Main responsibilities

  • To ensure that the studies undertaken for this important and complex project are executed in a timely manner and to the highest possible standards.
  • Contribute to the planning workshops for studies 2, 3 and 4.
  • Co-develop study protocols for studies 1-4, working closely with the research team at LSHTM, including drafting standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Contribute to preparing ethics applications
  • Contribute to a desk review of policies of relevance to study 1 and 3
  • Assist in project planning and ensuring that study protocols and regulatory requirements are followed
  • Create topic guides for interviews
  • Train and supervise the field coordinator and research assistants
  • Contribute to qualitative data collection and supervise research assistants to ensure high quality data
  • Analysis of the qualitative data
  • Generate reports working closely with the Project Lead in Nepal
  • Provide information to the Project Lead or quarterly reports to the funder (NIHR)
  • Contribute to dissemination of the findings in peer reviewed publications, conferences and meetings

Responsibilities for specific studies

Study 1 (health system readiness study). Data from Study 1 will feed into the design of Study 2 (cluster randomized trial) and study 3 (process evaluation).

The research team at NNJS will develop and finalise the protocol, all the data collection instruments, topic guides for study 1 working with the team at LSHTM and other technical advisors in Nepal. The post holder will contribute to preparing the initial draft for ethics application for submission to the Nepal Health Research Council, and develop the topic guides for interviews They will train and supervise the field team coordinator and research assistants, contribute to data collection and data, analyse the qualitative data.

Study 2 (Cluster randomized trial): A similar process will be followed as for Study 1. The post holder will work with the LSHTM lead for Study 2 to analyse the data.

Studies 3 (Process evaluation): Similar processes will be adopted for study 3 as for study 1. 

Study 4 (Economic evaluation): A similar process will be followed as for Study 1. The post holder will work with the LSHTM lead for Study 4 to analyse the data.

Requirements of the post

Essential

  • PhD or Master in public health, social science, anthropology or related qualitative field
  • Training in qualitative research for health-related research
  • At least five years’ experience of planning, preparing and managing qualitative studies and analysing data
  •  First or last author of peer reviewed publications in national or international journals on epidemiological or health systems-related topics
  • Experience of applying for ethical approval
  • Able to stay in post for the duration of the project

Preferred

  •  Postdoctoral training in implementation science
  •  Experience of international research collaboration
  • Training in health economics
