Summary

We are looking for someone who is results driven and motivated to make a difference. The Geospatial Application Developer will be based in Kathmandu, Nepal, and working in a cross­ cultural, impact-oriented environment. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who combines broad content knowledge with a passion to innovate and develop exciting tools and applications to address key issues in the Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) region. As ICIMOD moves into its new Strategy 2030 period from 2023, our programmes will be more focused and impactful, and we are eager to welcome someone who is a great team player and will be able to contribute through this important role.

Responsibilities and tasks

  • Under the direct guidance and supervision of the Chief of Party - SERVIR-HKH, the Geospatial Application Developer will be responsible for designing and developing geospatial applications on desktop, web, and mobile platforms.
  • Specific duties and responsibilities will include the following:
  • Analyse user requirement, and design and develop geospatial applications to meet user demand
  • Design and develop responsive and user-friendly UI design of web mapping applications
  • Develop web mapping applications including both front-end and back-end components
  • Develop where necessary server-side geoprocessing services to carry out on-the-fly spatial analysis and present results in the form of maps, charts, tables, etc.
  • Develop automation tools where necessary to carry out ETL jobs
  • Create regular versioning and backups of codes using version control programmes like Git
  • Prepare technical documents of the applications developed

Qualifications and experience

  • A postgraduate degree in computer science/geoinformatics or related subjects with at least three years of relevant work experience is required. A first-level university degree in combination with six years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • Strong programming skills in Python with proven web development experience in Django/Flask
  • Good working experience in Linux environment
  • Proven experience in engaging with various users to design and develop user-friendly geospatial applications
  • Good knowledge of and experience in working with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, as well as UX/UI design of web-based applications
  • Good experience in designing and developing spatial and non-spatial databases
  • Proven skills in working with MS SQL, PostgreSQL, etc.
  • Experience in developing web mapping application using standard APls such as ArcGIS JavaScript API, Google Maps API, OpenLayers, Leaflet, etc.
  • Experience in mobile application development is an advantage
  • Fluency in English
  • Strong analytical and report writing skills

Duration

This is a two-year project position with a probation period of six months, starting as soon as possible. Possibility of an extension subject to performance and ICIMOD's future funding levels.

Remuneration

Salaries and benefits at ICIMOD are competitive compared with other international organisations. We offer a comprehensive benefits package, which includes provident fund, health insurance, severance pay, education grant, and paid leave. For expatriates there is tax exemption in Nepal; they are responsible for home country tax payments. Expatriate staff are also entitled to home leave ticket, as well as a removal and installation allowance.

Remuneration is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
