Project Description

Deloitte Consulting is the implementing partner for the USAID-funded Nepal Trade and Competitiveness Activity based in Kathmandu. This position is under Deloitte Consulting Overseas Projects LLC. The purpose of Nepal Trade and Competitiveness Activity is to increase Nepali private sector participation in targeted global value chains. This is a five-year program, however the position is currently for one year with possibility of renewal.   

Gender Equity and Social Inclusion (GESI) Specialist -  will be responsible for developing and implementing activities designed to enhance the social and economic trade and competitiveness opportunities for  women, ethnic minorities and vulnerable or marginalized groups. S/he will also help design activities that  address the barriers faced by women, youth, and disadvantaged communities in trade, business, and access to resources and market information, which impede their ability to be competitive and expand their businesses.  The GESI specialist will also address Sector specific interventions, such as in Agriculture, Tourism, and Digital Services.  These could include but are not limited to training women in processing and mentor for leadership; facilitate supply chain linkages and relationships and benefit farmers/primary producers; support women entrepreneurs to scale businesses, promoting flexible work and development of digital tools, among others.  The position reports directly to the Director of Finance, Admin, and Compliance (DFAC). 

This is a part time position (20 hours), that may become full time upon finalization of responsibilities. 

Deliverables, Tasks and/or Outputs
Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Act as a technical resource for integrating GESI approaches across all components of the project 
  • Support the Home office Gender Adviser in the development of the project’s GESI analysis and GESI strategy 
  • Provide GESI-related support and technical oversight in the development of key project deliverables including GESI activities in all of the technical work streams
  • Advise teams on implementation of GESI approaches
  • Identify GESI-related learning needs and build capacity of project staff. 
  • Capture, develop, standardize, and share tools, resources, and processes that promote GESI
  • Support the capture and dissemination of GESI-related lessons learned and leading practices 
  • Lead the collection of GESI indicators; support the MEL team/expert in collecting GESI data and in developing GESI-related learning questions and other resources/methods 
  • Plan and deliver trainings to project staff, counterparts, and beneficiaries on issues related to GESI and sectors such as Agriculture, tourism, and digital services.
  • Promote the project’s GESI work and participate/present at meetings and events as required

Qualifications/Requirements

  • The GESI Specialist should have the following qualifications: 
  • Master’s degree in international development, gender studies, behavioral economics, agronomy, sociology or other related field required (additional years of experience may be considered in lieu of advanced degree)
  • Demonstrated experience and technical knowledge in GESI required
  • Professional experience in the Agriculture or Tourism or Digital services sector is preferred
  • Knowledge of qualitative research methods and standards, with field research experience strongly desired
  • Experience with communications development and management is preferred. 
  • Experience with leading and managing Monitoring Evaluation and Learning activities is preferred. 
  • Experience conducting GESI trainings
  • Experience with USAID or other donor programming 
  • Strong interpersonal and team skills, with ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures 
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently. 
  • Sound computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office® applications, particularly Word and PowerPoint
  • Ability and willingness to travel 
  • Fluent in written and spoken Nepali 
  • Fluent in written and spoken English
