About the organization
Accountability Lab Nepal was founded in early 2012 as an effort to work with young people to develop new ideas for accountability, transparency, and open government. It has evolved into a global network of local Accountability Labs that are finding new ways to shift societal norms, solve intractable challenges and build “unlikely networks” for change.
Background
Accountability Lab is a growing “translocal network” with over 100 staff across 12 countries around the world. The Lab has been registered as a non-profit organization in Nepal for over 10 years. Accountability Lab Nepal was the first of our network Labs to open in 2012.
The Lab has implemented a variety of projects and programs around issues of youth leadership, democracy, governance, anti-corruption, and elections. These programs have collectively mobilized and engaged millions of citizens behind reform processes and have led to a variety of concrete changes in policies, practices, and behaviors related to these issues. The Lab prides itself on its positive, solution-oriented approaches; an emphasis on building what we call “unlikely networks”; and a focus on south-south learning over time. In 2018, the Accountability Lab won the International Anti-Corruption Award from the UN Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Center (ROLACC).
Accountability Lab Nepal (ALN) is a local organization with 15 core staff, 15 community frontline activists (CFAs), and more than 500 volunteers across the seven provinces of Nepal. ALN has engaged more than 1.5 million people directly including more than 5,000 government representatives through initiatives like Integrity Icon, the Integrity School, and Gov-HER-nance.
Our Vision is a world in which citizens are active, leaders are responsible and institutions are accountable. It is a world in which resources are used wisely, decisions benefit everyone fairly, and people lead secure lives. Our Mission is to make governance work for people through three core areas of work:
1. Value shifting campaigns- Shifting norms and behaviors around issues of accountability to ensure that integrity becomes the expected behavior within societies;
2. Efforts to equip reformers for collective action- training and collaborative spaces inside and outside government- to provide reformers with the knowledge and tools they need to push for better governance; and
3. Programs to influence policies, processes, and practices- around critical accountability issues, through growing coalitions and advocating for change (communities):
