Role: Field Research Specialist
Reports to: ASIA Nepal Research Lead / Country Representative
Works alongside: a methods and quality adviser, a research assistant, and a field team
Location: Kathmandu, with regular travel within Nepal
Duration: 10 months with possibility to extend to 12 months
Contract type: Employment
Remuneration: gross monthly remuneration up to 185,000 NPR (exclusive of the applicable pro rata Dashain allowance) depending on candidate’s experience

About the study
SET4NPL is introducing a new e-ticketing system on public transport, where passengers pay their bus fare digitally, using a bank card or mobile wallet they already have, instead of cash. ASIA is running a study to find out whether people actually adopt it in practice, and specifically whether passengers, drivers and conductors change how they pay and collect fares once the system is activated.
The study follows the introduction of the e-ticketing system as it reaches new routes, starting in the Kathmandu Valley, then intercity routes, then rural ones. It uses mixed methods: observing how fares are paid on board, short surveys with passengers, and interviews with drivers and conductors, bus operators, payment providers and regulators. The findings will tell the programme what is working, what is getting in the way, and what to change. A summary of the research design is attached and should be read before applying.
Purpose of the role
The Field Research Specialist runs the study day to day. You turn the research design into the actual survey, observation and interview tools; plan and lead the fieldwork; hire, train and manage the field team; analyse the evidence; and write the study's reports yourself. The overall design is set, but how it is carried out (the tools, the sampling, the field plans, the analysis) is yours to own, working with ASIA, SET4NPL team and the methods adviser. This is a hands-on role: you will be on the buses and at the stops with your team, not managing only from a desk.

A substantive research role with genuine ownership of a serious, live study under an internationally-funded programme, with a methods adviser and a research assistant supporting you so that you lead the work rather than doing everything alone. This is not a routine indicator-tracking MEL position.

About the organization
Chögyal Namkhai Norbu founded ASIA – Association for International Solidarity in Asia – in 1988, following a series of missions conducted in India, Nepal and Tibet, during which he witnessed the difficult economic and social conditions of the Tibetan population and the progressive weakening of the language and traditional culture.
In the 1990s, projects focused on Tibetan settlements in India with the aim of improving the living conditions of refugees; later, the focus increasingly shifted to the vast areas of China inhabited by ethnic Tibetans (Qinghai, Sichuan, the Tibet Autonomous Region, Gansu).
In 1999, ASIA obtained recognition of its suitability from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as an international cooperation NGO and in 2001 it signed the “partnership agreement” with ECHO (European Community Humanitarian Aid Office) for emergency projects to support populations affected by natural disasters.
After the catastrophic tsunami of 2004 , the area of intervention was expanded to Sri Lanka with post-emergency, reconstruction and development projects for income-generating activities.
Since 2009 , after ten years of experience in the Himalayan geographical area, new projects have been started in Nepal and contacts with the governments of Bhutan and Outer Mongolia.
Since 2016 ASIA has started working in Myanmar and Mongolia, and since 2020 also in Bhutan.
ASIA has been active in Italy and Europe since the early 1990s with development education projects aimed at spreading knowledge of the traditions and historical heritage of the peoples of Tibet and the Himalayan region, considering them an invaluable treasure to be safeguarded and passed on.
On September 27, 2018, Chögyal Namkhai Norbu, Founder of ASIA, passed away.
With his awareness and commitment, he left a significant mark on society internationally, contributing to the evolution of humankind. His passing is a great loss for humanity, but his teachings will live on and benefit all living beings.
