The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH invites application from suitable and qualified professionals to work with a new project Green Recovery and Empowerment with Energy in Nepal (GREEN). GREEN is implemented under the ongoing project Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Programme (REEEP), a technical cooperation project agreed between the Government of Nepal (GoN) and the Federal Republic of Germany. The new multi-Donor Action with co-financing from the European Union and the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development and implemented by GIZ aims to increase sustainable consumption and production of energy in the public and private sector. The project will address both the promotion of renewable energy resources for electricity generation and access as well as energy efficient practices in industries and enterprises with the overall aim to reduce the carbon footprint of energy in public and private sectors and contributing to green growth and livelihood improvements in Nepal. In this regard, the project places particular focus on integrating disadvantaged groups, marginalized and vulnerable communities, and improving gender equality for women.

Duty Station: Kathmandu 

Responsibilities:

  • Initiate and implement cooperation with the private sector to introduce new and financially sustainable business models (ESCOs/PPPs/pay-as-you-go) and innovative technologies in the sector of Renewable Energy (RE) 
  • Support the Alternative Energy Promotion Centre (AEPC) to optimize its incentive/subsidy mechanisms and to align these mechanisms with REEEP’s goals 
  • Support the private sector and municipalities to develop financially sustainable projects and proposals eligible for financing through AEPC’s incentive mechanisms and REEEP
  • Initiate cooperation between municipalities and private companies (e.g. PPPs) for improving the supply of reliable RE in rural areas
  • Design and organize capacity development activities for municipalities and the private sector to develop and implement sustainable RE projects
  • Evaluate and shortlist project proposals for expanding RE 

Required qualification and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in renewable energy, engineering, environment science, (renewable) energy, management and/or related topics with 10 years of total working experience in renewable energy sector and energy related issues OR a master’s degree in renewable energy, engineering, environment science, (renewable) energy, management and/or related topics with 8 years of total working experience in renewable energy sector and energy related issues
  • At least 10 years of experience in renewable energy sector and energy related issues (experience in the rural energy sector would be an added advantage)
  • At least 5 years of experience in working or cooperating with the private sector to implement market-based approaches 
  • At least 5 years of experience in leading work-packages independently and supervising (teams of) consultants and managing larger contracts
  • Experience in policy support and in working with AEPC and municipalities is a must
  • Experience in working in rural areas of Nepal is an advantage
  • Experience with working in donor funded projects will be an asset
  • Excellent language skills (oral and written) in English and Nepali.
