Essential skills and experience

  • A strong background in current affairs journalism with an in-depth knowledge of political, social and economic issues in Nepal.
  • A minimum of 5 years experience in editing and producing radio and/or television news and current affairs programming.
  • Excellent editorial judgement and knowledge of BBC editorial guidelines and how they apply to programme content.
  • Excellent writing skills for radio and/or television.
  • A thorough understanding of the processes of radio and/or television production, and demonstrable experience of location recording and live programme making.
  • Understanding of the editorial and technical demands of editing a weekly series. 
  • In-depth awareness of the media industry in Nepal and audience needs.
  • Proven experience in developing creative programme formats for different broadcast platforms and audiences.
  • Previous experience in a senior management role in a media environment and in leading, motivating, recruiting and developing programme teams.
  • Fluent written and spoken Nepali and English.

Desirable:

  • Previous experience of working on radio and/or television programming with development goals.

Job Description

Overall purpose of the job:

We require an experienced, dynamic Editor to build on the solid successes of the Sajha Sawal debates and lead on the editorial direction of the programme. This is a senior editorial leadership role reporting directly to the Country Director. The Editor will assume overall editorial responsibility for the programme and work alongside the BBC Nepali Service in ensuring BBC editorial guidelines and values are adhered to in all programme content. It is vital that he/she make sure that the programme delivers fully on its commitment to address specific governance issues as outlined in a set of objectives for the overall project. . The Editor will manage, lead and develop the Sajha Sawal production team and oversee all programme planning and production outputs. He/she will manage the programme budget, making sure that all production activities are carried out efficiently and in line with BBC standards, policies and procedures. The role requires a person who has extensive editorial experience in television, radio or multi-media current affairs journalism in Nepal, an excellent contacts book, and who can make sound judgments on editorially sensitive issues.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • To take overall editorial responsibility for the weekly radio and television discussion programme Sajha Sawal.
  • Ensure that the debates maintain high editorial standards, are balanced and impartial and comply fully with BBC editorial guidelines. Manage editorial issues which may arise and take responsibility for sign off programmes prior to transmission.
  • Responsible for ensuring that the debate programmes adhere to the programme’s editorial brief: to reflect the geographic, ethnic and social diversity of Nepal through an audience led format.
  • Shape and implement a coherent social media strategy for Sajha Sawal, making sure the strategy meets required BBC guidelines.
  • Working with the Senior Project Manager, ensure that all programmes meet the required development objectives.
  • Oversee all long and short term planning activities and scheduling for the debates.
  • Manage the programme budget and programme expenditure, making sure that all activities are carried out efficiently and effectively. 
  • Provide strong management and leadership to the Sajha Sawal production team.
  • Build the capacity of the team, identifying and delivering on training needs.
  • Develop a long term vision for Sajha Sawal that puts innovation and creativity as the focal point of the programme.
  • Ensure that BBC Health and Safety guidelines and procedures are observed on all production activities and that the programme team are trained and briefed to manage risk. Provide sign of on BBC Risk Assessments for all activities.
  • Schedule and oversee monthly reviews of the programmes, incorporating feedback from the BBC Nepali Service and BBC Media Action London based teams.
  • Provide support to BBC Media Action’s partner radio stations in Nepal in their production of regional versions of Sajha Dawal debates.
  • Maintain relationships with Sajha Sawal’s television broadcast partner.
  • Participate actively in BBC Media Action Nepal’s senior management team and establish strong ties between production and other key departments.
