Job purpose
Reporting to the Country Director, the Editor will be responsible for the creation and delivery of of a short drama series as part of the above BBC Media Action lifeline project. Working with the Project Director and managing a small production team, the postholder will be responsible for ensuring that the projects deliver on time, on budget and to high quality. S/he will ensure that the content responds to audience needs, as identified through formative research and user-testing, and that it fulfils development objectives to ensure impact.  

Main duties

  • Oversee and actively engage with the production of compelling storylines for a forthcoming lifeline radio drama which conforms with funders expectations and meets requirements in terms of length, quality of drama and storytelling. 
  • Take overall editorial responsibility for lively, engaging trails for each storyline.
  • Develop and manage a strategy for bringing new creative talent into the department. 
  • Ensure full integration of high editorial standards and compliance with BBC editorial guidelines. 
  • Mentor and coach scriptwriters and other production staff on the team
  • Oversee all long and short term planning activities and scheduling for the dramas.
  • Critically evaluate ideas, scripts and writers against a variety of criteria and making judgement on their potential, applying an in-depth understanding of donor demands as well as creative considerations.
  • Ensure that BBC Health and Safety guidelines and procedures are observed on all production activities and that the production team members are trained and briefed to manage risk. Provide sign of on BBC Risk Assessments for all activities.
  • Work closely with the research team and ensure that research findings are well incorporated into the output. 
  • Assess and develop opportunities sustain and grow the drama production as required by the Country Director.

Essential skills and experience 

  • Evidence of leading production teams and delivering high quality radio productions
  • Ability to define creative content and see it through to execution
  • Creative, compelling, logical writer
  • Proven experience in developing creative programme formats for different broadcast platforms and audiences.
  • A thorough understanding of the processes of radio production, and demonstrable experience of location recording.
  • Good contacts in drama and theatre industries in Nepal
  • Good casting  skills, taking in project commitment to marginalized groups
  • Basic understanding and appreciation of budgeting
  • Ability to mentor and supervise both editorially and technically in radio drama production
  • Good English and Fluent Nepali – spoken and written
  • Work as a team member, co-operating with, and managing other staff 
  • Creative thinker able to find solutions to a variety of issues
