Objective: To support partner organisations (HRDC and ERECP) to ensure quality repair and reconstruction of the hospital buildings and to provide technical support to make post emergency reconstruction work accessible to people with disability.
Major Responsibilities:
- To supervise and provide technical advice before and during repair, retrofitting and construction of buildings through early identification of problems/issues, providing both technical and management solutions and recommendations to the contracted companies and partner’s staff overseeing the projects
- To support and supervise the repair and reconstruction of Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre for Disabled Children (HRDC) Banepa
- To support and supervise the repair and retrofitting in Biratnagar Eye Hospital, Sagarmatha Chaudhary Eye Hospital, Lahan and Eye Care Centres in Rajbiraj and Gaighat
- Adhere to safety policy and practices and create positive and encouraging work environment.
- Ensure that projects are completed on schedule, according to contractual conditions, within budget, and with adherence to high standards of quality construction.
- Coordinate with all sub-contractors, inspectors for monitoring and evaluation tasks,
- Ensure that materials and tools are available for each workday.
- Ensure the construction is accessible for persons with reduced mobility as per the accessibility guidelines, building code of the government of Nepal and internationally accepted universal design principles through:
- Initial training of construction company and partners on accessibility standards and universal designs
- Develop checklists and tools to ensure regular follow up, revisions as per need to allow accessibility to be addressing throughout the design and implementation
- Help with identifying and documenting appropriate and innovative accessible construction technologies for reconstruction in order to build a collect lessons learned and illustrate “good practice models”
Technical skills
- Design, construction and cost estimate skills, especially with appropriate materials and building systems (mud, bamboo, stone, wood, etc.)
- Extensive knowledge of ecological, appropriate and vernacular technologies
- Good understanding of technical details and retrofitting strategies
- Knowledge on accessibility standards and universal design principles
- Good comfort on construction sites
- Autocad, Sketchup or equivalents and good hand sketching
- Excellent knowledge of Word and Excel
Professional and Personal Profile:
- Good skill in earthquake resistant building construction
- Strong knowledge and understanding of project management
- Knowledge of humanitarian system and work
- Good networking and communication skills
- Proven experience in working with partners
- Knowledge on disabilities or other at risk groups and inclusion
- Personal Attributes:
- Good multi-tasking with time-management skills. Ability to work under pressure and independently
- Strong team-working skills, ability to work independently, as well as in a group setting
- Excellent verbal and communication skills in English and Nepali
Education and experience
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or architecture with at least two years’ experience in the relevant field.
- Experience in accessibility for people with disability and universal design
