GRAPE II is a joint Nepali-German Project under the guidance of the Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation (MoLCPA), Government of Nepal, with Technical Assistance by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The overall objective of the Project is to strengthen gender-equitable and climate-resilient economic development in Nepal.

The project focuses on five key areas: 

  1. Business Development: Supporting new and existing Micro, Small, and Medium-Sized enterprises (MSMEs) that contribute positively to climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, youth empowerment and gender equality. 

  2. Entrepreneurial Ecosystems: Developing climate-resilient and biodiversity-friendly value chains and markets through partnerships.

  3. Local Economic Governance: Promoting gender-responsive and climate-resilient economic development through improved local governance. 

  4. Awareness Raising: Sensitizingactors in the entrepreneurial ecosystem to the role of women in economic development.

  5. Scaling Innovation: Expanding successful practices, tools and technologies for gender-equitable and climate-resilient economic development.

Position: Advisor- Business Development and Marketing 
Duty Station: Kathmandu

Responsibilities:

1. Business Development Advisory for women- and youth-led MSMEs and agricultural cooperatives

  • Conduct assessments to identify growth opportunities, operational gaps, and strategic challenges within MSMEs and cooperatives
  • Assist MSMEs and cooperatives in setting business goals and in developing tailored business growth strategies, roadmaps and pitches
  • Organize training sessions and workshops on business development topics (e.g., operations, marketing, leadership)
  • Support MSMEs and cooperatives in market segmentation, targeting, and positioning.
  • Provide advice to MSMEs, cooperatives and business associations on topics such as product aggregation, value addition, branding, marketing and more
  • Promote the adoption of digital tools, technologies, and processes, including e-commerce, digital marketing, and CRM systems
  • Focusing on informal businesses and vulnerable groups, organise financial literacy trainings
2. Partnership Networks:

  • Build and nurture strategic partnerships with businesses, business membership associations, business and financial service providers, and others
  • Facilitate the development of gender-inclusive, climate resilient value chains by actively soliciting partnerships 
  • Connect MSMEs and cooperatives with potential partners, suppliers, customers, and investors
  • Facilitate participation in industry networks, trade shows, and business forums

3. Improved Services:

  • Provide technical backstopping to enterprises, including identifying production pockets, producer organizations, cooperatives, supporting integration of technical support and facilitating buy-back arrangements
  • Identify and build partnerships with financial service providers including commercial banks and private equity firms that invest on women-led and climate resilient MSMEs and facilitate investments
  • Engage with key stakeholders in the ecosystem to drive innovation, including integration of digital solutions to address supply chain challenges and drive business growth
  • Work together with municipal and provincial government to promote regional products (e.g. Organic Karnali) and to invest in value chains
  • Actively gather evidence and support business membership organizations through various dialogue fora for evidence-based advocacy on policy reform
4. Project Implementation:

  • Contribute to project implementation during planning and learning processes
  • Track progress of supported partners using relevant indicators
  • Contribute to reporting, success stories, and impact assessments
  • Develop various knowledge products and communicate key developments and insights to a broad and diverse audience

Required qualification and experience:

 Educational Qualification:

  • Master’s degree in business administration, marketing, economics, entrepreneurship, or related field. Equivalent qualifications will be considered
Professional Experience:

  • At least 5 years of experience in gender-inclusive business development and entrepreneurship in Nepal
  • Demonstrated expertise in sustainable private sector development in Nepal, with a specific focus on women’s economic empowerment and climate resilience
  • Experience working with market systems development approach
  • Thorough understanding of challenges of MSMEs and cooperatives in Nepal
  • Knowledge of green business practices and sustainability principles
  • Experience in conducting training, mentoring, and coaching
  • Experience working with incubators, accelerators, agriculture insurance and innovative digital solutions is an advantage
Skills and competencies:

  • Excellent analytical skills and solution orientation; proven track record in driving results and implementing solutions
  • Strong networking and communication skills, capable of building and maintaining partnerships with private sector actors
  • Good understanding of challenges of women and youth-led businesses in Nepal
  • Ability to advise businesses at the leadership level and facilitate business deals
  • Sound network with financial service providers
  • Excellent documentation and presentation skills
  • Ability to work independently under pressure with minimal guidance and meet tight deadlines
  • Open to constructive feedback
Language Proficiency:

  • Excellent command of Nepali and English languages (both written and spoken)
