Umbrella Organization Nepal is a non-profit, non-political, non-sectarian and Non-Government Organisation (NGO), which has been working in Nepal since 2005 and has all relevant registrations required to perform development activities in Nepal. The Organisation was set up in response to the growing number of children in Nepal whom were displaced and separated from their families by trafficking, poverty and the internal conflict in the country.

Salary: 26000NPR/month

Purpose of the Position: 

UON has been implementing a special project since 2019, it is designed to provide advice & information in safe and comfortable environment for youth (especially care-leavers) in Kathmandu, mainly focused on providing services for those in +2, or in that or the surrounding age brackets. It is called the “Chautari Youth Club” and will provide a space where young people can come on an informal basis, and access information and support on a number of subjects – but with a focus on encouraging young people who are not employed or in education to re-enter one of those fields. A number of other support services and activities will be facilitated from this youth centre.

As part of the CYC, there will be a “Computer Skills Training” centre, aiming to provide, for free, young people with the technical skills required to obtain a job in the growing ICT sector. Students will have free access to computers, and will learn skills online with reputed free courses.

The Youth Officer working at the Computer Skills Training centre will be responsible for preparing and supporting group projects to showcase the skills of the students, overseeing and helping with their learning goals, and forming relationships within the ICT sector.

Core Responsibilities and Tasks: 

  • Lead the Computer Skills Training Centre by providing support for group-projects and supporting students with their learning outcomes
  • Form positive relationships with young people, creating a safe environment where they can talk freely and receive advice.
  • Facilitate youth-led activities: community and educational. This will involve encouraging young people to think of activities that will benefit the community, and then implementing them. Educational activities might include trips to colleges, places of interest etc.
  • Liaise with local community members and local government to ensure positive relationships, and the positive reputation of the CYC.
  • Preparation of reports, as required.
  • Develop case studies and success stories.
  • Facilitate donor visits.
  • Promotes and abide by internal policies and procedures including but not limited to: child protection policy, code of conduct and mandatory reporting responsibilities.
  • Any other duties deemed appropriate by Senior Youth Officer or Program Director.

Representation:

  • Represent UON as the first point-of-contact for the club
  • Represent UON at meetings with potential service providers

Profile:

Essential Qualifications, experience, and competences

  • Bachelor degree in computer science or other relevant subjects
  • Experience and proven skills in working with youth and young people.
  • Demonstrable working knowledge of the following coding languages: HTML/CSS, Python, JavaScript,
  • Demonstrable working knowledge of photo/video editing
  • Demonstrable working knowledge of app/game design
  • Advanced communication skills, including written and spoken English.
  • Ability to work as part of a team, relying on each other skills and knowledge
  • Proven problem solving and organisational skills, flexible and calm under pressure
  • Friendly and approachable
  • Ability to form and maintain relationships with a range of people: young people, local government, employers, educators.

Desirable Qualifications, Experience, and Competences

  • Experience in teaching young people
  • Preferably the person with working experiences with Raspberry Pi/Arduino.
  • Experience working with challenging/disadvantaged/vulnerable young people
  • Working knowledge of some/all of the following languages: C++, PHP, Photoshop, Illustrator, Coral Draw etc.
  • Knowledge of concepts around machine learning, distributed systems and other advanced programming skills.
  • Own links to organisations/institutions who may be able to offer services / provide support

Terms of Contract:

The initial contract for the above vacancy will be for one year, with the option to extend based on the performance and availability of funding.

Salary will be NPR. 26,000-29,000/month with all benefits stated in the Labour Act 2074.
