The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH invites applications from suitable and qualified professionals for the Climate Resilient for Organic Smallholders in Nepal (CROSIN) Project. CROSIN is a development partnership with aQysta BV, Midsona and GIZ under the develoPPP Programme that aims to increase the climate resilience and income of smallholder farmers in Nepal through the promotion of regenerative organic agriculture, the use of renewable energy in agro- processing and irrigation, and the development of transparent, traceable supply chains for export- oriented organic products. The overall objective of the project is to increase climate resiliency of smallholder farmers in the project regions in Nepal.

The project focuses on five key areas:
1. Organic agriculture with agroforestry: Onboard farmers into organic value chains, build their capacity through tailored training and inputs, and engage farmers to scale knowledge.
2. Renewable energy powered agro-processing: Upgrade agro-processing facilities by integrating renewable energy powered technologies and improving quality standards.
3. Renewable energy powered irrigation: Support farmer groups with renewable irrigation systems and promote sustainable water use.
4. Responsible supply chain, with end-to-end digital traceability and transparency: Stablish a responsible supply chain with digital traceability, helping farmers monitor crops and ensure
transparency.
5. Disseminate and scale up: Promote Nepali organic products locally and in Europe by engaging stakeholders, influencing policies, and onboarding actors in spices and medicinal herbs.

Position:  Trainee – Climate Resilient Agriculture and Training

Duty Station: Kathmandu with frequent field travel in the project locations

Key Responsibilities

Under the overall supervision of Project Manager and in close cooperation with the team members, S/he will work and gain working knowledge in climate resilient agriculture and training facilitation as follows:

  • Assist in developing comprehensive growing manuals for various crops, focusing on crop rotation within an agroforestry system that includes remedies for pests, diseases, and stunted plant growth, specifically tailored for climate resilient agriculture.
  • Assist in exploring soil health management practices and organic input systems.
  • Assist in developing curricula for training programs focused on climate resilience and organic agriculture, ensuring relevance and practical for farmers.
  • Facilitate field training sessions according to the crop cycle, in consultation with involved partners to ensure alignment and effectiveness.
  • Gather feedback from farmers, partners, and field data to continually improve the training content, making it more relevant.
  • Assist in conducting a need of assessment and designing Community Learning Centers (CLCs).
  • Contribute to the establishment of the new Cooperative Resource Center (CRC) concept developed by NACCFL.
  • Support the development of sustainable business models for both CLCs and CRCs by identifying viable income-generating opportunities and partnerships.
  • Perform other tasks assigned by the project team to support the implementation of the project.

Required Qualification, Competencies and Skills

  • Master’s degree in Agriculture, Forestry, Natural Resource Management or related field.
  • Familiarity with digital monitoring tools and farmer data systems is an asset.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Fluency in English and Nepali language
  • Willingness to travel across project clusters
