BBC Media Action is the BBC’s international development charity. Working with media and communication to help reduce poverty and support people in claiming their rights, our aim is to inform, connect and empower people around the world. BBC Media Action reaches some 200 million people through local broadcast partners, BBC channels (especially the BBC World Service), online, mobile and print platforms and through interpersonal communication. We are currently delivering projects in 24 countries, including in Nepal. BBC Media Action has been working on communication for development projects in Nepal since 2007, giving us a well-developed understanding of Nepali audiences and significant experience of producing and evaluating media content on a range of issues to diverse target audiences.

Duration: 6 months (possibility of extension subject to funding)

Job purpose:

Reporting to the Editor, this position requires holding day-to-day editorial and directorial responsibility for the quality output of the TV Drama/PSAs and community discussion programmes. The Television Director will be responsible for direction, visual editing, recording and managing all technical aspects of Television productions across the projects.

Main Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Film and edit the Television programmes/productions as per the BBC Media Action’s editorial standard
  • Direct single or multi-camera filming of Television productions
  • Manage and operate cameras and other filming equipment
  • Liaise with and guide crew members about all technical requirements of production e.g. lighting and camera movements, sound recording requirements, set designing, vision effects, graphics and transitions
  • Direct via talkback equipment to Presenter, Producer, Floor Manager, Camera Operators, Sound Technician, Boom Operators, Lighting crew, Drama/Content Producers and other personnel
  • Appropriate use of graphic style and the music for the production wherever required and if necessary
  • Ensure that inserts, distance recordings and other materials used in the episodes are of quality and fully compliant to BBC standards
  • Coordinate with the project team to develop production plan and determine workflow requirements
  • Ensure that vulnerable contributors are protected to the highest level in accordance with BBC Guidelines. Advise the Editor on possible risks and concerns
  • Know when to use different technical and creative techniques and apply these effectively
  • Know to install and operate video conferencing on location and in difficult contexts
  • Diagnose faults and wiring errors in audio and video distribution systems and fix it
  • Follow the requirements of the BBC health and safety guidelines and procedures
  • Providing Trainings and mentoring to local TV partners on quality visual recording and editing on different format programmes and PSAs
  • Help create high quality promotional materials for BBC Media Action Nepal office
  • Provide any additional support when required by the Country Director, Editor, Senior Producer
  • Take part in all aspects of production and post- production processes of TV programmes

Essential skills and experience:

  • Demonstrable creative ability
  • Minimum university degree in relevant field
  • Minimum 5 years of experience using media for developmental goals
  • Minimum 5 years of experience of editing/filming/directing different format of TV programmes or visual productions
  • Demonstrable experience of leading a team to record high-quality visual content
  • Thorough knowledge of visual editing software, MS-Office Suite, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and email applications
  • Ability to provide technical advice to Editor and Production Manager   
  • Strong understanding of BBC editorial values and their application in programme-making
  • An ability to execute the information and programme contents clearly by adopting a range of styles, tools and techniques appropriate to the audience and the nature of the information
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • A good standard of written and spoken English and Nepali
  • Commitment to BBC Media Action’s vision, mission and objectives

  • Experience using media for developmental goals.
