Established in 1998, BBC Media Action is the BBC’s international development charity. Working with media and communication to help reduce p overty and support people in claiming their rights, our aim is to inform, connect and empower people around the world. BBC Media Action reaches some 200 million people through local broadcast partners, BBC channels (especially the BBC World Service), online, mobile and print platforms and through interpersonal communication. We are currently delivering projects in 28 countries, including in Nepal.

BBC Media Action has been working on communication for development projects in Nepal since 2007, giving us a well-developed understanding of Nepali audiences and significant experience of producing and evaluating media content on a range of issues to diverse target audiences. Our work in Nepal currently focuses on governance, health, resilience and humanitarian preparedness and response with strong gender commitments and focus.

Since the earthquake on 25 April 2015, we have been implementing a programme focused on reconstruction, building upon our lifeline work. In addition, we have also started a new project titled “Retrofitting of Unsafe Housing”. The objective of this project is to create demand through increased motivation and efficacy to build earthquake-resilient housing using retrofitting techniques

Based: Kathmandu with possible travel to field locations

Duration: 6 months with possibility of extension subject to funding (Up to March 2019)

Job purpose

We have been producing lifeline radio programme, Milijuli Nepali (Together Nepal) for the people affected by the earthquake. The programme seeks to address the need for actionable and practical information and recovery-related content among earthquake affected people in Nepal, The programme also gives people a voice to share their needs, concerns and stories. The Radio Producer will be responsible for writing script and presenting “Milijuli Nepali”. S/he will also produce reports and case studies from the field and put forward ideas and treatments in editorial meetings for themes that address issues of reconstruction and retrofitting in earthquake-affected communities. The radio producer will also be responsible for recognising the needs of the earthquake affected communities a varied range of radio techniques to pass on information to the audiences in an engaging way.

Main Duties

  • Identify the needs of the affected community by using internal and external information coming from reliable sources including government, I/NGO, civil society, NRA, development partners, formal research and local contacts in affected areas.
  • Contribute original ideas and treatments for content during daily editorial meetings
  • Conduct interviews in a sensitive way with a wide range of people on location mainly on reconstruction of their houses and communities
  • Produce radio packages ready for transmission on a diverse variety of issues addressing topics around the reconstruction 
  • Write the script and present the programme from the studio or out on location
  • Provide training and mentoring to radio producers from community radio stations on the most effective way of producing useful, timely and engaging information for the affected community.
  • Ensure all content meets the required technical standards, BBC editorial policy and BBC values.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor

Essential skills and experience

  • Experience of producing and presenting radio programmes for Nepalese audiences
  • A strong and engaging broadcasting voice
  • Radio production skills, including producing editorial content, technical recording and postproduction skills
  • A proven track record in producing engaging radio content for local audiences often for women and marginalized communities
  • Demonstrable creative ability
  • Strong understanding of BBC editorial values and their application in programme-making
  • Ability to work on own initiative and organise time effectively within a range of often conflicting deadlines
  • The ability to forge strong working relations quickly and gain the trust of project stakeholders, including partners
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Extensive knowledge of how social media can be used to support the goals of Milijuli Nepali
  • A good standard of written and spoken English

Desirable skills and experience

  • Experience using media for developmental goals.
  • Good working knowledge of local languages.
  • Understanding of reconstruction practices in rural areas and the issues earthquake-affected communities are facing in the rebuilding process
