Karuna Foundation Nepal (KFN) is a Nepali Non-Governmental Organization which aims to prevent avoidable disabilities among children and improve quality of lives of children and adults with disabilities, developing evidence based scalable community models.

It has been working in disability prevention and community based rehabilitation in Nepal since 2007.

Position: Officer-Communications and Advocacy 
Duty Station: Kathmandu
Contract type: Fixed term contract with three months of probation period

Program Background:

Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Program is a community-based model of inclusive development implemented in direct partnership with the provincial government of Province No.1 and the Local Governments. The goal of the program is to prevent avoidable disabilities and improve quality of life of children and adults with disabilities and their families through community-based rehabilitation. It works to strengthen community support systems for the achievement of these goals.

Education and experience

  • A minimum of bachelor’s degree in mass communication, Social Science preferable with specialization in communication from a recognized institution with minimum two years’ experience in similar capacity in International/Non-Governmental Organization

Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills in Nepali and English
  • Substantive knowledge and practical experience in communication strategy development, including demonstrated expertise implementing visibility communications or media projects.
  • Strong media contacts and proven success pitching stories to media outlets.
  • Excellent writing skills, with experience writing reports, newsletters, and program updates.
  • Computer skills specifically in Microsoft Office Package - Excel, Word, PowerPoint
  • Excellent understanding of web production, social media, and multimedia tools.
  • Intimate knowledge and ease of navigation of traditional and new digital and social media.
  • Knowledge on photo/video editing, design software, infographics and electronic promotional materials and tools.
  • Increase visibility of KFN’s social media
  • Experience in back-office website management and social media 
  • Analytical, dynamic, smart, motivated, and positive 
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Good knowledge, understanding and/or interest in disability, social inclusion and social development and its issues
  • Attention to detail alongside the ability to see the big picture. 
  • A positive collaborator and a strong team player
  • Excellent understanding of development partnerships, fund-raising, donor strategies and international relations

Key responsibilities:

Planning:

  • Develop and update communication manual for the organization
  • Prepare external communication strategy, plans and tools for the organization and its projects.

Internal and external communications: 

  • Assist in promoting the work of the organization in the media through seminars, workshops, press conferences and other events and prepare, edit and issue approved press releases on events
  • Take the lead in organizing media outreach; arrange all media contacts, press briefings, and interviews; provide talking points and other materials as needed for senior staff; respond to media inquiries quickly and effectively
  • Organize national level advocacy campaign, sensitization events in coordination and collaboration with government and non-government organizations
  • Develop content for the organization's website and social media platforms and work for the maintenance of the website and social media platforms.
  • Lead the development of the organization's annual progress report or yearbook with information support from M&E section
  • Actively participate and represent the organization in various networks and movements
  • Coordinate production of a diverse range of information products including audio/visual communications and lead the development of IEC/BCC materials as per the program’s needs,
  • Prepare and disseminate publications to key stakeholders, including donors, community, government, and other relevant agencies.
  • Undertake crisis media work including ensuring timely KFN Nepal media response to key external and internal events.
  • Support the development of best practices and lessons learnt directly linked to KFN’s goals and activities and share such products with concern stakeholders

Partnership and external affairs

  • Develop and implement a partnership strategy that ensures the best of relationships with partners, donors and other like-minded organizations, 
  • Maintain a database of information relating to partners’ and Donor’s requirements and goals and other details relevant to the development and maintenance of partnerships, 
  • Develop and manage Memorandum of Understanding as may arise from partnership.

Recording and documentation

  • Act as a focal person for communications and documentation at the central level, coordinating information request and documentation of best practices for internal and external sharing.
  • Oversee a well-managed archive of Karuna Foundation Nepal's publications, documents, video films and photo archives.
  • Connection, communication, and networking 
  • Well connected with Nepalese and International medias.
  • Updated with global digital movement and progresses.
