Oxford University Clinical Research Unit-Nepal (OUCRU-NP), is a not for profit organization (NPO) with its head office located in Lalitpur, Bagmati Province, Nepal. The mission of OUCRU-NP is to build a strong mass of young Nepalese clinicians and scientists who can help build the scientific and clinical future of Nepal. The main research focus of OUCRU-NP has been on the common infectious diseases within Nepal including but not limited to: enteric fever (Typhoid and Paratyphoid); scrub and murine typhus as well as other causes of febrile illness; antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and infections of the central nervous system and Hepatitis E. OUCRU-NP plans to expand its research work to emerging pathogens with a flexibility to be able to address the public health priorities in Nepal in the future.

Qualifications (Education and Experience)

  • Master’s degree in Microbiology with more than five years of experience of working in a  clinical laboratory.  
  • Experience of working in an ISO accredited laboratory and research laboratory.
  • Experience of being involved in a randomized controlled trial.
  • Experience of working in pharmacy with ability to manage pharmaceutical products and prescriptions. 
  • Having GCP and GCLP certificates preferred. 

Knowledge

  • Familiarity with GCP, GCLP guidelines and ISO accreditation. 
  • Good organizational skills  
  • Fluency in verbal and written communication in both English and Nepali
  • Willing to work on a flexible schedule.  

Skills

Job Description

Purpose of the job position: 

Microbiologists are responsible for undertaking laboratory analysis and monitoring of microbial cultures, samples and new drugs using specialist computer software and a range of identification methods and clinical trials. 

Responsibilities of the post holder 

  • Responsible for daily management of microbiology laboratory (at specified work site) including specimen reception, handling, laboratory testing and reporting following standard operating procedures (SOPs).  
  • Responsible for applying good clinical laboratory practice (GCLP) guidelines. 
  • Responsible for molecular testing of clinical specimen and bacterial isolates. 
  • Support laboratory manager (both of work sites and OUCRUNP) for setting up of quality assurance /quality control (QA/QC) procedures. 
  • Manage and upgrade bio repository system at OUCRUNP laboratory. 
  • Responsible for development of SOPs, and study specific laboratory manuals. 
  • Archiving laboratory documents and records at specified work site and OUCRUNP according to OUCRU document and record control guidelines. 
  • Manage and update inventory of consumables as well as inventories of laboratory equipment. 
  • Initiate and support laboratory management at specified work site and OUCRUNP by developing instrument preventive maintenance contracts. Facilitate procurement officer of OUCRUNP in annual maintenance contract follow up. 
  • Ensuring and monitoring smooth operation of cold chain system.  
  • Assist in laboratory induction training of OUCRUNP laboratory staff. 
  • Liaise with clinical trial unit (CTU) of OUCRUNP for setting up a study. 
  • Responsible for addressing queries by CTU study monitoring visits, preparing reports and dissemination of such reports within the laboratory team. 
  • Liaise with data management team of OUCRUNP regularly.
