Oxford University Clinical Research Unit-Nepal (OUCRU-NP), is a not for profit organization (NPO) with its head office located in Lalitpur, Bagmati Province, Nepal. The mission of OUCRU-NP is to build a strong mass of young Nepalese clinicians and scientists who can help build the scientific and clinical future of Nepal. The main research focus of OUCRU-NP has been on the common infectious diseases within Nepal including but not limited to: enteric fever (Typhoid and Paratyphoid); scrub and murine typhus as well as other causes of febrile illness; antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and infections of the central nervous system and Hepatitis E. OUCRU-NP plans to expand its research work to emerging pathogens with a flexibility to be able to address the public health priorities in Nepal in the future.

Job Description

Purpose of the job position: 

The position is responsible for providing clinical and administrative support for research trials, studies, and  projects. It also involves recruiting and screening potential participants. Performs patient/research subject  evaluations, administers medications and research instruments and collects data. MO is also responsible  for patient education related to study. 

Responsibilities of the post holder: 

1. Assessment of the patients in outpatient clinics: 

1.1. Take proper history: 

  • Medical Officers are responsible to take history of patients in a proper and  and organized manner. 

1.2. Perform clinical examinations: 

  • MOs are responsible for clinical examinations of the patients.  They will then provide the details from the exam to the study team. 

1.3. Evaluate medical reports: 

  • Medical reports are must for an effective study. MOs are responsible for evaluating medical reports and analyzing data plus information that are derived from the reports. 

1.4. Prescribe medications: 

  • Medical Officers need to prescribe proper medications to the patients bearing in mind their appropriate doses.  

1.5. Referral to other departments if necessary: 

  • Referrals are also a part of MOs responsibilities.  MOs need to ensure that incase a referral is to be made it has to be done to the accurate and appropriate department. 

1.6. Enrollment: 

  • MOs are responsible for enrolling patients in appropriate studies. They are also in charge of taking all the criteria’s into consideration plus brief the patients about all the aspects of the study. 

2. Explain about ongoing studies to the patients and take consent for their participation in the studies. 

3. Counseling the patient and follow-up of the study patient 

4. Documentation of patient details in Clinical Record Form (CRF) for the enrollees in the studies. 

5. Assist and supervise research nurse and community medical auxiliaries (CMA) to take the sample and advising them whenever needed. 

6. Tracking and Evaluating Clinical Data: 

  • Medical Officers takes charge of ordering and interpreting tests for patients. MO are responsible to  record, analyze and report exam data to facilitate study. 

7. Evaluating the Latest Medical Programs and Research

  • While the field of medicine is constantly evolving, the Medical Officer’s knowledge needs to evolve  also. Medical Officers must take time to procure data about the most current medical programs and  research that relate to his field of expertise in order to provide the best diagnoses and healthcare  treatment plans to patients. 

8. Making Program Recommendations or Revisions 

  • While overseeing and monitoring the clinical services and programs that are being implemented by  staff, the Medical Officer will often discover gaps in service or area where services can be improved and make program recommendations or revisions to address those issues. 

9. Maintaining Accurate Documentation 

  • Medical Officers must ensure that consistent and accurate documentation of medical records for all patients takes place. This helps accumulate and organize important clinical data that is vital to  providing comprehensive results and findings in the study conducted.
