Job Description

Roles and responsibilities of this job

We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer (HVAC) to deliver technically robust HVAC designs and documentation for building services projects. The candidate will focus on calculations, compliance, equipment selection, submissions for approval (SFA), and supplier tendering, while operating independently under limited supervision. The role aligns with AIRAH Level 2 Mechanical Engineer standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Technical Calculations & Compliance: Ventilation, thermal loads, fire/smoke control, pump/fan static, NPSH, expansion tank, refrigerant charge, gas ventilation/flue design.
Equipment Selection & Tendering: Prepare equipment schedules, compile SFA documentation, issue RFQs, review offers, perform commercial analysis.
Drawings & Coordination: Produce technical sketches, check shop drawings, monitor drafting performance, ensure safe access and commissioning feasibility.
Documentation & Certification: Compile inputs for design certificates, Safety in Design reports, and maintain procurement schedules.

Assessment Methods:

Written Test: Write a cover sheet for a submission for approval.

Practical Task:

Draft an email to a supplier requesting technical clarifications.
Draft an email to a supplier requesting pricing (RFQ)

Document Review: sample calculation and submission documents or reports they have produced in the past.

Required Education Level:Under Graduate (Bachelor)

Other Specification

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
Knowledge of HVAC systems, psychrometrics, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics
Experience with CAMEL or equivalent software for heat load/system calculations
Familiarity with NCC and Australian Standards (AS 1668.1/1668.2, AS/NZS 3666.1, AS 5149, AS/NZS 3000, AS 5601)
Experience in tendering, document control, and project coordination
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
