The Himalayan Innovative Society (THIS), established in 2003, is a non-governmental organization working closely with the Nepal Government in the family reintegration of children rescued from vulnerable child care institutions in Nepal. We work in communities to prevent family-child separation through community awareness informing the psychological harms of child institutionalization, educating parents and strengthening gatekeeping system in Nepal.

We have supported over 1000 children directly and indirectly through our various projects since 2003.

We have a transitional care center in Kathmandu, where children rescued by Nepal Government from vulnerable child care institutions are rehabilitated for a temporary period, healed, and prepared for family reunification.

The NGN-THIS Junior Youth Flat (JYF) is where Nepali youth stay in Kathmandu whilst studying under the auspices of the Empowerment Project.   The JYF is specifically for those youth studying in Class up to 10 or School Leaving Certificate (SLC) level (older youth studying for +2, diplomas or bachelor degrees live in the Senior Youth Flats or hostels).  There are currently 18 youth living the JYF, of which 12 are boys and 6 are girls.  They are aged between 12 and 19. 

The JYF provides a secure, homely, family-based environment for vulnerable young people " predominantly from Humla " whilst they are studying in Kathmandu.  There are three floors in the JYF: one for girls, one for boys, and one which is known as the 'family unit' for younger trafficked children whose families we have been unable to locate and are now studying under the Empowerment Project.  There are currently 2 staff members living in the JYF whose role it is to care for the young people there.  

Objective:  JYF Manager/Mentor is responsible for overseeing the operation of all affairs in the JYF under the supervision of Empowerment Project Manager.  He should ideally be a strong and inspiring male figure, and he would provide high quality care for all the junior youth and management for the staff.  He provides effective mentoring, discipline, counseling and supports to develop their life skills, education and overall development of all youth in the flat.  The JYF Manager is also responsible for creating an environment that encourages the youth to be positive, engaged, and active members of society, and who are committed to their education.  

 

Job Description:
 

 

  • Ensure that the youth implement their daily activities such as going to school, maintaining personal hygiene, maintaining cleanliness of their rooms and the home, completing home work etc.
  • Providing mentoring and support for youth with their educational assignments, and conducting regular tuition classes for weak students to improve their educational performance in the school.
  • Providing mentoring and support for the youth in relation to their social development and as responsible citizens in Nepal.
  • Conducting extra activities for the personal development and life skills of youth in close coordination with Empowerment Manager.
  • Provide high quality care to the youth and develop a trusting and open relationship with each individual in the JYF.
  • Managing necessary items for daily operations (food, stationery, clothes etc).
  • Keeping proper records of materials that are stored and provided to youth. Ensuring the proper utilization of the support items provided to the youths.
  • Collecting bills and expenses details which are necessary for the JYF.
  • Ensuring the youth follow the rules and regulation of JYF.
  • Coordinate with School and colleges to check educational progress of concerned beneficiaries.
  • Manage the JYF Child Care Assistants and give them managerial support.
  • Manage financial transactions and shopping, including collecting petty cash from THIS office.
  • Keeping systematic records of expenditures and incident’s report.
  • Coordinating with the NGN-THIS Finance Department and the NGN-THIS Empowerment Manager to ensure smooth daily operations of the JYF.
  • Ensure the safety, security, health and psychological well being of every youth.
  • Ensuring the tidiness and cleanness of building and compound.
  • Implement the planned activities of the project in close coordination with the Empowerment Manager.
  • Participating in training where appropriate.
  • Play a supportive role to Empowerment Manager to achieve the goals of the project.
  • Providing written and verbal reports to Empowerment Manager, as per THIS’ reporting procedures.
  • Making recommendations to Empowerment Manager to resolve any problems which arise in the JYF.
  • Abide to THIS and NGN’s Child Protection Policy, Communication Policy, Finance and other existing organizational policy and procedures.
