Established in 1998, BBC Media Action is the BBC’s international development charity. Working with media and communication to help reduce poverty and support people in claiming their rights, our aim is to inform, connect and empower people around the world. BBC Media Action reaches some 200 million people through local broadcast partners, BBC channels (especially the BBC World Service), online, mobile and print platforms and through interpersonal communication. We are currently delivering projects in 28 countries, including in Nepal.

BBC Media Action has been working on communication for development projects in Nepal since 2007, giving us a well-developed understanding of Nepali audiences and significant experience of producing and evaluating media content on a range of issues to diverse target audiences. Our work in Nepal currently focuses on governance, health, resilience and humanitarian preparedness and response with strong gender commitments and focus.

Job Description

Objective of the job: To prepare in-depth audio/visual reports through investigation for inclusion in the radio and TV discussion programme, Sajha Sawal, on issues identified by the team.  

  • Identify, in coordination with the team, issues suitable for coverage in BBC Media Action’s discussion programme, Sajha Sawal.
  • Carry out in-depth  investigation on the identified issues by researching, developing news sources, reviewing resource materials, field visits and interviews.
  • Record audio and video during the interviews and field visits, and collect other evidence that support the report.
  • Package the collected materials into an audio/video report by scripting, mixing and editing the available materials ensuring that content is well researched, culturally sensitive and complies with the editorial guidelines of the BBC.
  • Assist in the production of Sajha Sawal by performing tasks such as research, report, write, translate, edit or adapt stories or programme material; to find contributors and interviewees as appropriate, maintaining professional journalistic standards of accuracy, impartiality and fair dealing and adhering to the BBC guidelines.
  • Maintain editorial quality control of the output with due regard to BBC editorial guidelines and the aims of the programme.
  • Supply content to the web producer.
  • Support the team in capacity building and training for local radio stations, as and when required.
