BRIEF POSITION DESCRIPTION

Responsible for the design, implementation, follow-up and evaluation of hygiene promotion activities of Save The Children in the target district in the regions of Mungling (Gorkha), Dhulikhel (Sindupulchowk), and Kathmandu. The post is specifically oriented towards the WASH emergency response in the context of the crisis in these three regions, and special attention will be made ​​on the integration of the WASH sector in other core sectors of Save The Children such as nutrition, shelter, food security, health, education, and child protection.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES 

Needs Assessments

  • Design, plan and implement of WASH hygiene needs assessments, including personal interviews at household level, facilitation of focus group discussions, site visits, and meet with key members of community

Program Design and Implementation

  • Design, plan, implement and follow-up of hygiene promotion activities such as:

             Training of trainers in hygiene promotion (for community volunteers, WASH committee 

             Setting up of children clubs and hygiene promotion activities in schools

             Liaise and coordinate activities with community health workers

  • Ensure community mobilization in all field related to water, hygiene and sanitation
  • Plan, organize, supervise and evaluate the distribution of hygiene, cleaning and water treatment kits for health centers, schools and families
  • Work with the WASH team to develop and evaluate methodologies for promoting sanitation, such as CLTS (community-led total sanitation), or subsidized latrine construction
  • Consider budget planning and logistics for hygiene promotion activities: making and follow-up of internal purchase order, quality control of material delivered by suppliers, planning team movements by vehicle members, teachers, health workers)
  • Follow-up of the hygiene promotion activities of potential local partners of Save the Children such as local NGOs, and participate in building their capacity

Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning

  • With the WASH team implementation of initial and final KAP surveys (Knowledge, Attitude, Practice) 
  • With the WASH team implementation of PDM survey (Post Distribution Monitoring) for kit distributed
  • Follow-up of water quality analyses at household level (residual chlorine, bacteriological analysis), in particular to assess the effectiveness of home water treatment techniques
  • Collection, consolidation and reporting of weekly hygiene and health related data, necessary for the consolidation of standard project and strategic indicators (number of beneficiaries, number and type of activity performed, results of water analysis performed)

Reporting

  • Weekly report to line manager, verbal reports whenever necessary

Integration, Coordination of Cross-cutting Aspects

  • Coordinate WASH hygiene activities with other sectors of Save the Children, in order to integrate activities in the same geographical area and for the same beneficiaries
  • Coordinate local level hygiene activities with VDC and DDC
  • Ensure the integration of gender, child protection, HIV, people living with disability, environment and other crosscutting issues to the design, implementation and development of Hygiene promotion activities, and ensure that activities take into account the needs of specific groups and individuals, especially children, the elderly and disabled

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelors in Health related discipline ( Public Health preferred and 1 year of relevant experience)
  • Organization, coordination and planning skills
  • Strong computer skills
  • Ability to listen and adapt
  • Excellent facilitation and community mobilization skills
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Fluent knowledge of local language
  • Fluent knowledge of written and oral Nepali and English
  • Nepali National
  • Experience in education, and in the field of training 
  • Direct experience in the geographical area targeted by Save the Children 
  • Experience working with an international NGO

WORKING CONDITIONS 

  • The position holder is expected to be ready for the deployment in any of the affected district(s) at short notice. S/he will normally work unusual hours and are often working in stressful and insecure environments.
