Job Description: Safety Officer/Lead for Water Treatment Projects in Nepal

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and Implement Safety Procedures: Create and enforce safety policies and procedures specific to water treatment projects, ensuring compliance with local regulations and international standards.
  • Risk Assessment and Mitigation: Conduct thorough risk assessments for all aspects of the project, identifying potential hazards and implementing mitigation measures.
  • Safety Training: Organize and conduct safety training programs for project staff and subcontractors, focusing on safe work practices and emergency procedures.
  • Safety Inspections and Audits: Regularly inspect project sites, equipment, and facilities to ensure compliance with safety standards and identify areas for improvement. Conduct safety audits as required.
  • Incident Management: Develop and implement incident reporting and investigation procedures. Manage the investigation of accidents and near misses, recommending corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Safety Documentation: Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, and training activities. Prepare reports for management and regulatory authorities as necessary.
  • Safety Culture Promotion: Foster a strong safety culture among all project team members and subcontractors, promoting awareness and accountability for safety performance.
  • Emergency Response Planning: Develop emergency response plans specific to water treatment projects, ensuring readiness to handle incidents such as chemical spills, fires, and medical emergencies.
  • Environmental Compliance: Ensure compliance with environmental regulations relevant to water treatment operations, minimizing environmental impact and promoting sustainable practices.

Requirements:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related field. Additional certifications in safety management (e.g., NEBOSH, OSHA) preferred.
  • Experience: Proven experience (X years) in a similar role within the construction or infrastructure sector, preferably with exposure to water treatment projects. Familiarity with international safety standards (e.g., ISO 45001) is advantageous.
  • Knowledge: Strong understanding of safety principles, risk assessment methodologies, and regulatory requirements relevant to water treatment facilities. Knowledge of chemical handling safety protocols is desirable.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and Nepali. Ability to effectively communicate safety requirements and procedures to diverse stakeholders.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to assess safety risks and develop effective mitigation strategies.
  • Team Player: Ability to collaborate effectively with project managers, engineers, subcontractors, and regulatory authorities to achieve project safety objectives.
  • Adaptability: Willingness to work in dynamic environments and adapt safety protocols to meet the evolving needs of water treatment projects.
  • Attention to Detail: Meticulous attention to detail in safety inspections, documentation, and reporting to ensure accuracy and compliance.
