Department: Pre-Primary School
Reports To: Primary In-charge / Principal

Position Summary

The Grade Teacher - UKG is responsible for guiding children (typically ages 5-6 years) through a critical transition year from playful learning to more structured, school-ready instruction. The teacher creates a vibrant, secure, and stimulating environment that balances academic foundations with socio-emotional development, ensuring each child is confident, curious, and well-prepared for the formal demands of Grade 1.

Key Responsibilities

Academic Instruction & Curriculum Delivery

Design and implement a comprehensive, theme-based curriculum that bridges pre-primary and primary pedagogy.
Deliver focused instruction in core readiness skills:

Literacy: Advanced phonics, blending, sight words, guided reading, and storytelling.
Handwriting & Fine Motor Mastery (Mandatory Expertise Area):

Systematically teach correct letter formation (uppercase and lowercase), size, slant, and spacing between letters and words.
Demonstrate and enforce the correct pencil grip, sitting posture, and paper positioning.
Conduct targeted fine motor activities to strengthen hand muscles and improve control.
Provide individualized, corrective feedback and remediation for handwriting difficulties.
Guide children in writing their full names, simple words, and eventually, legible and correctly structured simple sentences.

Numeracy: Number concepts (1-100), simple operations, patterns, and problem-solving.
Environmental Science (EVS): Exploring concepts through observation and projects.

Classroom Management & Environment

Establish clear, consistent routines and positive behavioral expectations to promote self-discipline and independence.
Create a print-rich, inquiry-based, and organized classroom environment that encourages exploration, responsibility, and peer collaboration.
Manage classroom resources and learning centers effectively.

Assessment, Evaluation & Documentation

Conduct continuous, formative assessments through observation, checklists, and anecdotal records.
Administer simple, age-appropriate review activities to gauge understanding and readiness.
Maintain detailed Student Portfolios showcasing progress in academics, art, and motor skills.
Prepare comprehensive Progress Reports and lead Parent-Teacher Meetings to communicate developmental milestones, strengths, and areas for growth.

Student Development & Care

Foster essential school-readiness skills: listening, following multi-step instructions, task completion, time management, and organizational habits (managing belongings).
Actively nurture social-emotional learning: sharing, taking turns, conflict resolution, empathy, confidence, and resilience.
Attend to personal care needs with dignity and support independence in hygiene, eating, and dressing.
Be vigilant about child safety, health, and well-being at all times.

Communication & Collaboration

Maintain proactive, transparent, and regular communication with parents via diaries, newsletters, digital platforms, and informal conversations.
Collaborate closely with LKG teachers for smooth transition and with Grade 1 teachers to ensure continuity.
Work as a team with teaching assistants, special educators, and activity teachers.
Participate actively in staff meetings, professional development, and school events (Annual Day, Graduation Ceremony, field trips, etc.).

Other Specification

Essential: Bachelor’s Degree with a Diploma/Certificate in Early Childhood Education (ECE)/Montessori/NTT (Nursery Teacher Training). A B.Ed. (Nursery/Kindergarten specialization) is highly preferred.
Experience: Minimum 2-3 years of hands-on teaching experience, specifically in UKG, Senior KG, or a Kindergarten setting. Experience with preparatory curriculums is key.
Mandatory: All required teaching certifications as per local/state educational authority regulations.
Proficiency in clear, legible handwriting in both print and cursive styles
Ability to demonstrate proper letter formation and pencil grip techniques
Experience teaching pre-writing and early handwriting skills to children aged 3-5 years.

Skills & Competencies

Deep understanding of the developmental milestones and learning needs of 5–6-year-olds.
Exceptional patience, energy, creativity, and a warm, nurturing demeanor.
Strong ability to balance academic rigor with playful engagement.
Excellent verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills.
Proficient in using educational technology (smartboards, tablets with learning apps) as a teaching aid.
Highly organized, resourceful, and an effective classroom manager.
Team player with a collaborative spirit.
