Working with media and communication to help reduce poverty and support people in claiming their rights, our aim is to inform, connect and empower people around the world. BBC Media Action reaches some 200 million people through local broadcast partners, BBC channels (especially the BBC World Service), online, mobile and print platforms and through interpersonal communication. We are currently delivering projects in 24 countries, including in Nepal. BBC Media Action has been working on communication for development projects in Nepal since 2007, giving us a well-developed understanding of Nepali audiences and significant experience of producing and evaluating media content on a range of issues to diverse target audiences.

A. Context 

Established in 1998, BBC Media Action is the BBC’s international development charity. BBC Media  Action uses media and communications to help reduce poverty and support people in claiming  their rights, our aim is to inform, connect and empower people around the world. We do this  through our focus on health, governance and rights, resilience, and humanitarian response,  partnering with civil society, local media and governments to produce creative programmes in  multi-media formats which inform and engage audiences and strengthen the media sector through  building professional capacity and infrastructure.  

B. Job purpose 

This role’s primary objective is:  

  • To provide support to our finance change projects, working with stakeholders across the  organization by providing a responsive and flexible project approach that is business  focused and supports the delivery of organizational and strategic priorities. 

C. Key responsibilities and accountabilities 

Supporting our Finance Change Projects:  

  • Provide knowledge and advice on financial controls, systems, and processes to ensure  strategic change initiatives are designed, implemented, and embedded effectively. This is a  key role supporting and shaping change that impacts across the finance function. 
  • Map existing processes and identify opportunities to streamline existing processes and  controls driving automation where possible. 
  • Consult with stakeholders including finance managers, country directors, budget holders,  and other relevant teams within the organization to ensure they are provided with relevant  information & insight into systems and process change plans such that they can feed into  decisions as appropriate. Nurture and maintain effective relationships with all stakeholders,  ensuring a collaborative and collegiate working environment.  
  • Improve monthly financial information and reporting to enable effective planning and  management including project reporting, accrued and deferred income and cash flow.
  • Working with the Finance Systems Manager, provide support to the financial systems  development projects including in the preparation and management of new software  projects and upgrades.  
  • Support other change projects within the Finance team as required.

D. Essential skills/experience: 

  • Degree in accounting, business studies, management or in ongoing final year/papers of CA  or ACCA. Experience in financial reporting and accounting for an international  development charity would be an advantage. 
  • Tangible practical experience of providing financial accounting support or resolving financial accounting queries. 
  • Ability to make suggestions for continuous improvements of core financial processes. 
  • An understanding of system internal controls including segregation of duties within a  complex organization. 
  • Able to communicate effectively with finance stakeholders, with a track record of proactive  engagement (e.g., problem identification and resolution). 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and experience of using financial accounting systems such as  Access Dimensions, SAP, or similar systems.
