Roles and responsibilities of this job

The Engineering Geologist will conduct geological and geotechnical investigations to support the planning, design, and construction of infrastructure projects. The role involves assessing site conditions, analyzing geological data, identifying potential risks, and providing technical recommendations to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant project execution while working closely with engineering and construction teams.

Key Responsibilities

Carry out systematic geological face mapping at each excavation round and maintain face logs, joint/discontinuity records, and photographic documentation.
Classify rock mass using RMR, Q-system and GSI, and recommend the applicable support class in accordance with the Contract drawings and specifications.
Advise on excavation method, round length, and blast/mechanical excavation adjustments based on encountered ground conditions.
Identify and give early warning of adverse ground — shear/fault zones, squeezing or swelling ground, water ingress, overbreak-prone and mixed-face conditions — and propose remedial and probing measures (probe holes, spiling, forepoling, grouting).
Monitor and interpret geotechnical instrumentation (convergence, crown settlement, load cells, extensometers) and report deviations from predicted behaviour.
Verify installed support against actual ground conditions and certify quantities of support elements for measurement purposes.
Assess portal, slope and adit stability, including surface geological mapping and slope treatment recommendations.
Prepare geological longitudinal sections comparing predicted vs. actual conditions, and support claims/variation documentation arising from changed ground conditions.
Maintain daily/weekly/monthly geological reports and coordinate with the Engineer/Client's representative on ground classification agreements.
Support tunnel safety measures relating to ground behaviour, including inspection after each round and instruction on scaling and hazard control.

Required Education Level:Under Graduate (Bachelor)

Required Experience:More than 5 years

Other Specification

Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent and post-graduate qualification in Geology or equivalent
10 years in construction works, experience of construction of at least one (1) Tunnel
5 years’ site experience as an Engineering Geologist in Tunnel works

Required Skills

Sound working knowledge of tunnelling practice — face mapping, rock mass classification, support design, instrumentation
Familiarity with drill-and-blast and NATM principles
Competence in AutoCAD, MS Office, and geological logging/plotting software
Ability to work in remote hill terrain with shift-based underground working
Fluency in Nepali and English
