The Programme
International Citizen Service (ICS):
International Citizen Service is a UK government-funded volunteer programme aimed at providing Nepali and UK young people with the opportunity to work together in the development sector to have an impact and become active global citizens. The programme is split into 2 parts, a 10-week placement and then a personal commitment to follow up on your learning with writing a report. You will receive a certificate of completion from the UK government once your report has been accepted. There are also other further opportunities to engage with the UK government Department for International Development (DFID) youth programmes after completion of the programme.
For the first part (placement), young people from the UK will travel to Nepal and work with you as part of a team of 12 volunteers – 6 Nepali and 6 UK plus 2 Team Leaders (1 Nepali/1 UK).
Our programmes are based in Gorkha and Makawanpur, and you will be living for 10 weeks in a selected community in a host home with a UK volunteer partner and will have 2 Team Leaders who manage the programme.
You will be responsible for delivering awareness-raising sessions, community infrastructure, developing resources for the community, undertaking needs assessments and action research, helping our partners deliver training to the communities and promoting active global citizenship. You will live with a host home family in a community alongside a UK counterpart and you’ll be expected to participate in family life.
The programme will contribute towards an immense personal and professional development, beginning with leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, while the working environment provides you the opportunity to work in a diverse team emphasizing on teamwork, and the whole project cycle management from planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation. Some of the technical skills that you will learn will be related to WASH or livelihoods improvement depending upon the theme you are engaged in.
