Raleigh International Nepal
We are looking for volunteers to join our Spring 2018 volunteering programmes: 1. Expedition Programme 2. International Citizen Service (ICS)
On both our programmes you will be working side by side with local communities and international volunteers in various villages of Gorkha or Makwanpur districts for 10 weeks, but there are differences in duration, activities and challenges of each programme. Please note: These roles are voluntary and are unpaid – but you are provided with accommodation, transport, food and medical cover.
The Programmes
Expedition Programme – 10 Weeks
A Raleigh Expedition is a unique opportunity, it combines 3 weeks of trekking and camping with 6 weeks of working in a remote community building WASH infrastructure and delivering awareness raising. You will be teamed up with 12 – 14 young people from across the globe and over the 10-week period you will change locations and teams 3 times. Expedition is an opportunity to challenge yourself both physically and mentally. On the 3 week trek you will be expected to carry all your own equipment, cook food for you and your team and camp out in tents. You will be given the opportunity to lead the group, navigate and spend time in local communities, whilst under the supervision of 3 volunteer managers and a local guide.
During time spent in the communities you will be participating in building WASH infrastructure, such as repairing water pipe systems, building new water tanks, providing handwashing stations and laying pipes. You will also be delivering WASH awareness raising sessions to local communities. You’ll live with your team in a simple bamboo shelter and local families will provide you with lunch and dinner, but you’ll cook your own breakfasts with the team. You’ll work in 2 different communities during your time on expedition.
International Citizen Service (ICS)
International Citizen Service is a UK government funded volunteer programme aimed at providing Nepali and UK young people the with opportunity to work together in the development sector to have an impact and become active global citizens. The programme is split into 2 parts, a 10 week placement and then a personal commitment to follow up your learning with writing a report. You receive a certificate of completion from the UK government once your report has been accepted. There are also other further opportunities to engage with UK government Department For International Development (DFID) youth programmes after completion of the programme.
For the first part (placement), young people from the UK will travel to Nepal and work with you as part of a team of 12 volunteers – 6 Nepali and 6 UK plus 2 Team Leaders (1 Nepali/1 UK).
Our programmes are based in Gorkha and Makawanpur, and you will be living for 10 weeks in a selected community in a host home with a UK volunteer partner. Your team mates will be living in the same community as well and you will have 2 Team Leaders who manage the programme. You will be responsible for delivering awareness raising sessions, community infrastructure, developing resources for the community, undertaking needs assessments and action research, helping our partners deliver training to the communities and promoting active global citizenship. You will live with a host home family in a community alongside a UK counterpart and you’ll be expected to participate in family life. After placement, you will be expected to complete a report called ‘Action@Home’.
This report is your commitment to the ICS programme to show what you have learnt and how you have applied it in your own community. We support you in this process and are here to help you achieve your positive impact.
