Helambu Education and Livelihood Partnership (HELP) has run a successful teachers grant programme for the last 9 years, and through that period have supported the employment of over 20 teachers across 15 schools in Sindupalchowk districts of Nepal. We began funding teachers to address the lack of teachers in several rural schools located mainly within the Helambu region, which impeded the delivery of effective teaching.

We are looking to implement several changes to our Teachers Grants Programme with the hope to improve the results. We aim to implement a more focussed scheme operating on a smaller level overall, to have more impact on the target schools, and allow for the greater opportunity for growth. As opposed to placing one teacher in each school, our revised proposal is to place two teachers at a school, so within our current funding capacity, support across 10 schools.

We are also looking to implement a more concrete, structured reporting scheme, alongside a more rigorous training schedule for the teachers. The increased teacher training will ensure that the teachers are equipped with all skills necessary before they begin their teacher’s placement. As such, we are looking to recruit a‘Teachers Development Coordinator’ to oversee and effect these changes.

Work Summary:

The key job is coordinating at HELP and on the ground to successfully co-design, develop and implement the HELP Saathi Programme. It will require the post to undertake rigorous tasks for the selection of the schools; recruitment of the third cohort of the Saathi teachers, co-designing and organizing training and regularsessions.

The work will involve spending time with both teachers, pupils and headteachers in schools, and after analysing the needs of teachers, co-design with them a high-quality programme of teacher training and support which is relevant to the local context. We’re hoping that a sufficient support system in place will enable these teachers to feel confident in their placements.

The coordinator will be responsible for writing bi-annual reports, as well as shorter, monthly updates that can be passed onto our donors. Establishing a strong donor-project relationship is essential for the future funding of this project.

Finally, the TDLC will be responsible for communicating with the Headmasters of the School, the HELP Saathi Teachers and the HELP office to facilitate genuine change in the School structure.
