Established in 1982, Bird Conservation Nepal (BCN) is the leading organization in Nepal, focusing on the conservation of birds, their habitats and sites. It seeks to promote interest in birds amongst the general public, encourage research on birds and identify major threats to birds' continued survival. As a result, we are the foremost scientific authority providing accurate information on birds and their habitats throughout Nepal. We provide scientific data and expertise on birds for the Government of Nepal through the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation (DNPWC) and work closely in birds and biodiversity conservation throughout the country.

BCN is a membership-based organization with a Founder President, patrons, life members, friends of BCN and several supporters. Our membership provides strength to the society and is drawn from people of all walks of life from students, professionals and conservationists. Our members act collectively to set the organization's strategic agenda.

Job Title: Senior Program Development and Communication Officer
Reports to: Chief Executive Officer
Duty station: Kathmandu, Nepal with 20% travel to field
Duration: Initially 1 year with possible extension for deserving candidate

Job Summary:

Senior Program Development and Communication Officer will be responsible for identifying programmatic priorities and funding opportunities, developing concept notes and proposals and drafting activities, budget and log-frames to support Bird Conservation Nepal's mission and goals to protect bird species, conservation of sites and habitats most significantly Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs), implement actions for threatened species and engage with local communities for sustainability. The Senior Program Development and Communication Officer should possess the ability to strategic thinking, creativity and project development skills to develop innovative programs that address key issues for the conservation of birds and their habitats.

Specific job responsibilities are outlined below:

1. Program Planning and Development

  • Possess knowledge on issues, challenges and gaps in relation to conservation of birds and their habitats.
  • Identify relevant areas for program development and potential funding opportunities.
  • Collaborate with BCN project team including People Partner with Nature project (PPN) team and develop fundraising strategy.
  • Develop strategic plan for the conservation of Birds and their habitats in all Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas/Key Biodiversity Areas.
  • Draft activities, budget, log-frames or theory of change, concept notes and proposals in consultation with relevant staff members and partners to multiple type of donors.

2. Database management

  • Establish and maintain a database of potential national and international donors and follow up on donors’ news, and fundraising opportunities.
  • Synthesize and analyse monitoring data from field projects to measure BCN’s progress, contribution and impacts against the various Global and Asia Pacific, Program/Project targets and milestones.

3. Coordination

  • Coordinate with different donor agencies for better understanding of funding criteria and ensure meeting all compliance requirement.
  • Coordinate with government line agencies and other stakeholders for any support during effective program/project development.
  • Coordinate with program staff for new ideas on program development.
  • Maintain good relationship and regular communication with donors and stakeholders.

4. Reporting

  • Prepare and submit monthly progress reports and yearly progress report to supervisor on regular basis.
  • Ensure high quality and timely reporting to donors.
  • Support in Quality assurance of all donor reports developed by staff.

5. Communication

  • Produce high-quality communication materials outlining program progress, including success stories and other publications and facilitate their distribution.
  • Develop/implement communication outreach strategies and produce outreach materials.
  • Liaise with stakeholders to maximize coordination and increase the Partnership’s visibility, under the CEO’s direction.
  • Preparation of press releases, announcements and other necessary documents for enhancing BCN efficiency.

Required Qualification, skills and experience

Education

  • Master’s degree in Zoology, Forestry, Environment, Natural Resource Management or any other relevant subject.

Experience

  • Minimum three years of relevant working experience in program/project development in conservation sector.
  • Proven track record of successful fund raising and network established in previous work.
  • Experience working with different donor agencies.
  • Experience in preparing fundraising tools.
