The school counselor should possess the skills and abilities to perform three major functions:

  • An educative function: To develop students personally and socially in the context of school
  • A reflective function: which is the exploration of possible impact of and contribution to personal and social development and mental health practices in classroom and other aspects of the school community. 
  • A welfare function: which is the responsibility to plan for and react to issues which impact students welfare.

Qualifications for School Counselor:

  • Minimum Bachelor's Degree in Psychology or Bachelor’s Degree in any other related subjects
  • Knowledge of counseling techniques and developmental theories relevant to school settings.
  • Excellent communication skills in English and Nepali, as well as expertise with computer applications.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and an optimistic outlook.
  • Experience working with children and young people will be advantageous.

Job Description

Responsibilities:

  • Issues with Peers: Work on with the issues such as bullying, clique formation, estrangement and infighting and all other issues related with students and peers that are crucial to resolve. Provides direction in the complete development of children and young people, including adequate counselling and assisting them in overcoming their weakness and resolving conflicts with their peers and others.
  • Psycho social Problems:  Help in the early identification of problem behaviors and take suitable steps to prevent the onset of psycho social problems. 
  • Working with Parents: Enable holistic support and ensure that the child’s home environment is secure and nurturing for them, as well as to keep the parents in the loop about the work done in counselling, and how to ensure that the results are maintained at home.
  • Working with Teachers and school administration: To empower students and to provide them with skills such as coping skills or problem solving strategies or emotional unburdening.
  • Proper documentation of student record: Maintain accurate and confidential student records by documenting counseling sessions, assessments, and interventions. Prepare reports as needed for the school administration.
  • Streamlining Insurance Procedure: Create a streamlined method for verifying students' insurance coverage at the start of each school year or during enrolling. Keep a well-organized database with all of the insurance information, including emergency contacts, coverage details, and policy numbers.
