Qualifications and Experience

  • Master’s degree in water resources engineering, hydrology or related field 
  • Good background and interest in water resources management, hydrological and hydraulic modeling, and climate data analysis
  • Proficient and experience in using computer programming languages, especially Python and handling large datasets
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in GIS and Remote Sensing (preferred)
  • Pleasant personality and team worker with good command of both English and Nepali languages

As a part of the NDRI Water and Climate Program team, the incumbent will work under the direct guidance of the Water and Climate Program Lead, and general supervision of the Executive Director. In addition, s/he will assist the respective Project Team Leaders/Leaders/Principal Investigators (PIs) and co-PIs as per projects/research works assigned to the incumbent.

S/he will to be stationed at NDRI office located at Manbhawan, Lalitpur, Nepal, but may require travelling frequently to the study/project locations. The initial contract will be for one year, including a two-month probation period, with the possibility of annual extension depending on the candidate’s performance and availability of funds.

The specific tasks and deliverables will be as follows:

  • Provide inputs to NDRI research projects and studies especially in the fields of water resources management, hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, disaster risk management and climate change assessment.
  • Undertake assigned tasks on two current NDRI projects, (i) “Building capacities for climate resilient water resources development under climate uncertainty” funded by APN, and (ii) ‘Understanding the gender, equality, social inclusion and distributional implications of the economics of climate change, the costs of adaptation, and bankable adaptation projects (ECONOGENESIS)’ funded by the IDRC Climate Adaptation and Resilience (CLARE) initiative.
  • Undertake the following specific tasks related to the APN Project (within the expected duration of 4 months):
    -Develop case studies of Climate Risk Assessment (CRA) using the upgraded “WEather generator                and Climate Change Scenario Generator” tool. RA will use both bottom-up approach and top-                down approach using the tool for CRA.
    -Develop / update the existing manual and the technical document of the tool.
    -Assist in preparing the training manual for the capacity building training workshop and                           information dissemination product for the dissemination workshop.
    -Assist in organizing the capacity building training workshop and dissemination workshop.
    -Assist the project team leader and supervisors in line with the project objective.
  • Support in identifying and preparing proposals for research projects in water resources engineering, climate change and related topics.
  • Prepare technical papers in peer-reviewed journals and conferences based on NDRI research activities, and prepare project reports and other knowledge products.
  • Perform any other assignments/tasks instructed by the Executive Director, Program Lead or other Senior NDRI Staff.
