Established in 1982, Bird Conservation Nepal (BCN) is the leading organization in Nepal, focusing on the conservation of birds, their habitats and sites. It seeks to promote interest in birds amongst the general public, encourage research on birds and identify major threats to birds' continued survival. As a result, we are the foremost scientific authority providing accurate information on birds and their habitats throughout Nepal. We provide scientific data and expertise on birds for the Government of Nepal through the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation (DNPWC) and work closely in birds and biodiversity conservation throughout the country.

BCN is a membership-based organization with a Founder President, patrons, life members, friends of BCN and several supporters. Our membership provides strength to the society and is drawn from people of all walks of life from students, professionals and conservationists. Our members act collectively to set the organization's strategic agenda.

Reports to : Vulture Conservation Program Manager
Duty Station : Butwal, with frequent field travel
Duration : One year with the possibility of extension on a contract basis
Working Area: Primarily Central to Western Terai Districts and based in Butwal, Rupandehi
Salary: As per BCN rule

Main Responsibilities:

The incumbent will be responsible for carrying out scientific surveys, liaison with government line agencies, NGOs, CBOs, local communities carrying out awareness, sensitization and advocacy programs to strengthen Vulture Safe Zones.

Required skills and education:

Master’s degree in Zoology, Forestry, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management or any other relevant subjects. Ability to work in rural environment and travel widely. Good command of both English and Nepali languages and familiar with standard computer software. Good presentation, communication and interpersonal skills.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Conduct and participate in scientific surveys of vultures and maintain the records of vulture sightings.
  • Determining the availability of toxic NSAIDs use and other threats in vulture habitats.
  • Promote the use of vulture safe drug to replace with other vulture toxic drugs and support to strengthening of Vulture Safe Zones in Nepal.
  • Liaise with related government bodies like Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation (Protected Areas), Department of Forests and Soil Conservation (Division Forest Offices), Department of Drug Administration, Department of Livestock Services, local veterinary and pharmaceutical associations, local governments, communities and other conservation organizations.
  • Conduct awareness, sensitization and advocacy programs to strengthen the Vulture Safe Zone
  • Identify, explore and monitor vulture nesting colonies and support community groups in monitoring and documenting vulture colonies.
  • Assist in the telemetry tagging on vultures and conduct ground truthing.
  • Monitor the survival of all tagged vultures and lead search and rescue efforts of sick, injured or dead wild and released vultures and investigate and document the causes of vulture mortality.
  • Maintain the database of globally threatened birds and habitats in Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs). Engage with community and stakeholders to highlight importance of these sites and monitor key bird species and conservation interventions with advocacy and fundraising.
  • Develop fund raising proposals to generate funds for Vulture Conservation Program.
  • Prepare and submit monthly plan, progress reports and yearly progress report to supervisor on regular basis.
  • Undertake any other BCN related task as per instructions from Senior Management Team.
