Established in 1982, Bird Conservation Nepal (BCN) is the leading organization in Nepal, focusing on the conservation of birds, their habitats and sites. It seeks to promote interest in birds amongst the general public, encourage research on birds and identify major threats to birds' continued survival. As a result, we are the foremost scientific authority providing accurate information on birds and their habitats throughout Nepal. We provide scientific data and expertise on birds for the Government of Nepal through the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation (DNPWC) and work closely in birds and biodiversity conservation throughout the country.

BCN is a membership-based organization with a Founder President, patrons, life members, friends of BCN and several supporters. Our membership provides strength to the society and is drawn from people of all walks of life from students, professionals and conservationists. Our members act collectively to set the organization's strategic agenda.

Position Title: Project Officer
Duty Station: Koshi Tappu, Sunsari 
Reporting: Senior Program Manager
Salary and benefits: As per the organization's norm commensurate with the project agreement.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The key role of the incumbent will be to implement the project “Sustainable management of
wetlands and grasslands: enhancing biodiversity and livelihoods” in Koshi Tappu Wildlife
Reserve (KTWR) and its bufferzone.

Specific responsibilities are outlined below:

  • Provide full support and assistance to Senior Program Manager in annual and quarterly planning and reporting of the project.
  • Liaise with KTWR office, Buffer Zone Management Committee and relevant local government line agencies, and other stakeholders over project implementation.
  • Support in conducting annual participatory population monitoring of globally and nationally threatened birds and their threats in KTWR.
  • Conduct and/or support in carrying out capacity building trainings, workshops and awareness campaigns to support project objectives.
  • Facilitate observation tours to different places of Nepal to local community groups.
  • Support in conducting baseline surveys for socio-economic studies and analysis.
  • Develop strategic plans for IGAs and other poverty reduction initiatives.
  • Conduct activities to explicitly empower and involve women based on gender analyses.
  • Conduct activities to address the needs and rights of indigenous and other marginalised groups, as well as youth.
  • Facilitate engagement and lessons sharing within district level network in project area.
  • Conduct public awareness raising and advocacy through appropriate media and other means.
  • Undertake any other responsibilities relevant for implementing the programme as directed by the supervisor.

Required skills and experience

Education

  • Master’s degree in Zoology, Forestry, Environment, Natural Resource Management or any other relevant subjects.

Experience

  • Minimum two years of relevant working experience in project implementation in conservation/livelihood support projects.
  • Experience in networking and relationship building.
  • Knowledge and experience on project and program management, design, monitoring and evaluation, and report writing.
  • Proven skills in community mobilization and trainings.
  • Strong communication skills.

Computer skills

  • MS Word, Excel, SPSS, GIS, Powerpoint, and online platforms (i.e. Zoom, skype, and other standard software).
