Yangshila Permaculture Learning Grounds was registered in 2014 as a non-profit organization tasked with protecting the biodiversity and indigenous knowledge of the Chure region of eastern Nepal. YPLG is one of the main local implementing partners of KTK-BELT (www.belt-project.org). KTK-BELT and YPLG are working closely with teachers, farmers, youth, and women to create a ‘Vertical University’ that will span from Koshi Tappu Wildlife Sanctuary (67 m.) to Kanchenjunga (8,586 m.), the third tallest peak in the world. The core objective is to give a framework to local farmers to become ‘professors’ of the Vertical University in order to teach their vast indigenous knowledge to the new generation while conserving threatened species and landscapes.

As part of the Vertical University project, YPLG is establishing several ‘Learning Grounds,’ hubs for conservation, education and local biodiversity-friendly livelihoods in Morang district. YPLG is seeking an experienced field coordinator.

Duty Station: Yangshila, Kerabari Gaupalika
Contract Period: One year with possibility of extension.  The first two months will serve as a trial to ensure mutual compatibility and fit.

KTK-BELT’s (www.belt-project.org) local implementing partner, Yangshila Permaculture Learning Grounds (YPLG) is seeking a program coordinator to oversee all project activities, coordination with local government stakeholders, donor reporting, and staff oversight. The incumbent will be expected to prepare comprehensive action plans, develop log-frames, devise project reports, and draft budgets. He or she will perform managerial tasks such as ensuring project objectives and goals are met and overseeing the overall safety, security and smooth operation of the project. To succeed in this role, you should be highly organized and have strong previous project management and NGO related experience (at least 7 years) preferably in the environmental sector. The incumbent must have impeccable writing and communication skills, project leadership experience, high degree of ethics and professionalism and be extremely safety and security conscious.  As part of this role, you will liaise with local bodies such as Rural Municipalities, Ward Governments, and local political representatives, and be tasked with leading the CPAC and DPAC process in Morang district. You must be willing to be based in rural eastern Nepal full time. Women and janajatis are strongly encouraged to apply. Local candidates from the eastern region will be given preference. 

Work Responsibilities

  • Work with both the KTK-BELT co-founders/co-directors and the YPLG Board of Directors to coordinate overall project activities, manage field staff, and monitor resources and equipment usage
  • Develop government liaising strategy, work closely with concerned Government bodies, and provide regular project activity updates to ensure good communication with government stakeholders 
  • Responsible for directly conducting all administrative work
  • Organize regular meetings with YPLG Board of Directors
  • Prepare project budgets
  • Monitor project progress and handle any and all issues that arise in the field through coordination with YPLG Steering Committee (Sanchalak Samiti)
  • Act as the point of contact and communicate project status to all participants
  • Use tools to monitor working hours, plans and expenditures
  • Assist YPLG team for preparation of appropriate legal paperworks.
  • Program Co-ordination, monitoring of ongoing programs.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive project documentation, plans and reports
  • Ensure standards and requirements are met through conducting quality assurance tests


Further Requirements:

  • Masters Degree in Public Administration, Rural Development, Agriculture, Environmental Sciences or related field required
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Experience in project management, from conception to delivery
  • Sound ability to prepare and interpret flowcharts, schedules and step-by-step action plans
  • Solid organizational skills, including multitasking and time-management
  • Very strong teamwork skills
  • Familiarity with risk management and quality assurance control
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Package and computer literacy a must
  • Nepali typing a must
