USAID’s Strengthening Systems for Better Health (SSBH) Activity is a 6-year project aimed at improving health outcomes in Nepal, particularly for the most marginalized and disadvantaged groups in the country. SSBH supports the Government of Nepal’s efforts to expand access to and use of quality maternal, newborn and child health and family planning services, with a specific focus on newborn care and is designed to achieve three major outcomes:

(i) improving access to and utilization of equitable healthcare services,
(ii) improving the quality of 
health services at facility and community levels and
(iii) improving health systems governance, within the context 
of federalism.

The project is implemented in close collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Population at federal level and with provincial and municipal governments, health facilities and other key health sector stakeholders at sub-national levels.

Supervisor: Senior Systems & Governance Lead

Reporting to the Senior Systems & Governance Lead, the Private Sector Specialist will lead strengthening of and engagement with the private sector to improve the availability and quality of MNCH/FP services.

Specific tasks include:

  • Review the findings of previous USAID-supported private sector assessments and leverage these findings to help identify specific opportunities to include private facilities in referral networks
  • Use the results of the project mapping study and the regulatory environment assessment to advocate for appropriate interventions and policy reforms.
  • Work with counterparts at the sub-national level to identify, test and scale innovations and promising practices from the private sector that increase access to, use and quality of MNCH/FP services, with an emphasis on ensuring high effective coverage at scale.
  • Help the Government of Nepal (GoN) engage private providers and improve the quality of care by identifying and replicating best or promising practices
  • Meet with commercial companies at the national level and in the project areas to identify possible areas for private support of project objectives through Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) or Corporate Social Responsibility models
  • Help to disseminate and advocate for replication of successful PPPs
  • Draft scopes of work, help select consultants and oversee consultants to conduct assessments and research on private providers and private health sector issues
  • Keep up to date with global best practices in private sector engagement strategies and identify promising models or approaches that can be adapted to the Nepalese context.

Skills Prerequisites:

  • Master’s Degree in Public Health, Health Administration, Business, or other relevant fields
  • Minimum six years of relevant professional experience in the health sector, preferably in the private sector or related to health systems strengthening
  • Strong organizational and computer proficiency skills
  • Experience with donor-funded international health programs in Nepal highly desirable, USAID experience preferable
  • Willing and able to travel to areas supported by the project
  • Advanced written/oral skills in English, ease in giving public presentations in English.
