This is a short term volunteering opportunity until November 2022 only

Mode of Delivery overview

Working at project location – In this role, you will provide on-site support in the project location and/or VSO office, (full-time unless otherwise specified) for a set period of time.

Role overview

Adopting innovative approaches of CCA/DRR and community resilience:

  • Support project team in exploring innovative and appropriate solutions mainly as part of sub-grant component to address negative implications of climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction. Provide advisory support to community in the implementation of agroecological practices for resilience building.

Strengthening youth led Climate Change Learning Center and group strengthening support:

  • Provide regular support for the strengthening of climate change learning center in selected wards of working Palika. Provide support to farmer groups, disaster management group for their institutional strengthening. Provide support for strengthening of eco clubs formed in the schools of working area.

Provide technical assistance to local government and stakeholders on resilience promotion:

  • Support local government stakeholders mainly ward and municipal representatives in mainstreaming and implementation of WDCRP, task force formation and providing capacity building support to task forces.

Support in process documentation:

  • Work closely with entire PRAYAS team members including the agroecological subcomponent in preparation of learning documentation on CCA/DRR. Work closely with the local level authorities (wards and palikas) to document assessments, plans and policies related to DRR/CCA and agroecological practices.

Representation:

  • Represent VSO Nepal PRAYAS project in different forums related to Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) and Agroecological promotion when and as applicable.

Support in Campaigns:

  • Provide support to community volunteers and youth leaders including YLCs to conduct community campaigns.

Others:

  • Any other duties assigned by line manager.

Skills, knowledge and experience required

Essential criteria: (must have to be able to carry out the role successfully)

Knowledge/qualifications:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in environment science/ agriculture science, development studies/ disaster risk management with one year or intermediate degree with three years’ experience on development preferably on CCA/DRR, conservation, or relevant subject.

Experience:

  • Previous experience of working on climate change, disaster management and resilience practices promotion.

Skills/Abilities:

  • Facilitation of capacity building events on CCA/DRR and community resilience.
  • Networking with local government authorities including wards and community.
  • Coordination with stakeholders, line agencies and partner organization

Desirable Criteria: (skills that could be an advantage in the role)

Experience:

  • Previous experience of working in DRR/CCA and resilience promotion.
  • Experience of working with community's capacity building and community engagement.

Allowance and Accommodation to volunteers at VSO

Allowance:

As a VSO volunteer, you will be sharing your skills with local communities on a full time basis. VSO will cover your travel, vaccinations, accommodation, and medical insurance costs, along with a local living allowance which will be paid in local currency. This allowance meets reasonable living expenses in country, but will not be enough to send money home. You will also receive some financial support to contribute to your on-going expenses at home.

Accommodation:

  • VSO works with some of the poorest communities in the world which means accommodation varies and will be basic.

VSO reserves the right to close this job early if we receive sufficient numbers of applications.
