Museum Manager

The Tamagi Museum and Learning Centre is a livelihood museum erected in order to educate and inform visitors to Tamagi. The main building is the point of departure for excursions to 10-15 sites within walking distance (2-2.5 km total distance), allowing visitors to conveniently and safely access local resources such as holy shrines, viewpoints, sites with ecological significance such as the agricultural terraces  as well as a short meditation in the Enlightenment Stupa to round off their visit to Tamagi. Information regarding historical & ecological significance and walking distances to  points of interest are available in the TMLC Office next to the main museum building and on the Internet. QR codes have been posted at numerous points of interest allowing visitors to access more detailed information (in Nepali and English) by means of their personal smartphones.

TMLC’s offerings target school children, students, researchers and people with family ties to Tamagi and its neighbouring villages – many of whom are living abroad – locals, organisations/associations as well as foreign and domestic tourists. The Gurkha Impact exhibit is of special interest to ex-Gurkhas and their families with its focus on the direct and indirect impact recruitment of Tamagi’s young men has had on remote villages such as Tamagi. Community Development and Livlihood are TMLC’s two remaining focus areas, highlighting the chanages Tamagi has undergone in the last century.

Job Description

Tamagi Museum and Learning Centre Trust (TMLC) is seeking interested and qualified candidates for the position of Museum Manager, responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the museum through administration and coordination. The Museum Manager will report to the leader of the Core Group Project, who will provide guidance and policies to help achieve TMLC's objectives. Since TMLC is involved in international projects, the Museum Manager will gain valuable experience working in an international museum environment and with other institutions abroad.

This position requires the successful candidate to reside at the project site in Tamagi, which is approximately an hour and a half by motorbike from Pokhara. TMLC provides separate accommodation and shared cooking facilities. Applicants who are not willing to stay in Tamagi during workdays are kindly requested not to apply.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Educational background in museology, social sciences, cultural heritage, environment, ecology, or pedagogy is highly desirable.
  • Experience working with civil society organizations or the private sector.
  • Proven experience in leading a team and working effectively with others.
  • Fluent in spoken English and native Nepali.
  • Proficiency in IT, including email, online collaboration, and conferencing tools.
  • Above all, candidates must be hands-on, solution-oriented, flexible, and capable of creatively managing available resources to achieve objectives within the scheduled timeframe.
  • Enjoy working with employees, youth, and school children (12 years and older).
  • Good health and physical fitness.
  • A positive, proactive approach.
  • Willingness to participate in activities at all levels.
  • Age: 35 - 55

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the daily operations of the museum and staff through administration and coordination.
  • Develop a semi-annual plan for the museum’s guidance and marketing.
  • Maintain active communication and cooperation with schools, particularly high schools.
  • Guide school students and other visitors.
  • Organize workshops on behalf of the museum.
  • Focus on both tangible and intangible cultural heritage.
  • Participate in various activities related to the museum’s objectives.

Compensation:

  • Compensation and benefits are negotiable based on qualifications and experience.

TMLC will offer a 3-year contract with a three-month probationary period. The tentative start date is April 1st, 2025, with annual contract renewal based on satisfactory performance.
