      Job Description

      • Collects field and quarry samples of construction materials and soils such as fresh and cured concrete, asphalt, sand, aggregate, pavement, structural steel, reinforcing bar; determines the location in which samples will be taken.
      • Performs a variety of routine and complex tests and inspections such as: soil classification, sieve analysis, gradation, PH, moisture, nuclear density, sand equivalent, oven moisture, Kelly-Ball cement, slump cone, and masonry tests, both in the laboratory and in the field.
      • Determines if test results are in compliance with applicable construction plans, specifications, standards and contracts.
      • Uses specialized instruments and equipment such as nuclear and electronic instruments; calibrates and adjusts instruments to compensate for changing conditions; performs routine cleaning, maintenance and servicing of assigned equipment.
      • Performs precise mathematical calculations related to materials testing; prepares data sheets and graphical representation of test results/data.
      • Inspects facilities where materials are used and stored to ensure compliance with Federal, State, and local regulations and ordinances.
      • Inspects the operations of asphalt and concrete batch plants; checks equipment, weights, temperatures and materials for compliance with specifications; tests and calculates aggregate gradings for field mix design.
      • Prepares a variety of technical and other written reports on laboratory test results; files and maintains laboratory records.
      • Communicates verbally and in writing with supervisors and coworkers, County and outside agency representatives, contractors, consulting firms, business and property owners, or the general public.
      • Performs related duties as assigned.
